Brian Freeman grew up in California's Bay Area in San Mateo (California) on. He attended Carleton College , Minnesota , where he graduated magna cum laude in English in 1984 .
Freeman started writing at a young age. His middle school teacher noticed his love for the craft and encouraged him to just sit in a corner and write his story instead of following the class curriculum. At the age of 13 he finished his first novel. He also enjoyed reading. He probably got his love for crime fiction from his grandmother, who had a penchant for crime fiction.
Prior to his writing career, which began at the age of 41, he worked as a database systems manager, communications strategist, and business journalist in Minnesota. He then became director of marketing and public relations at Faegre & Benson international law firm in Minneapolis . Brian married his wife Marcia there and settled with his family in St. Paul, Minnesota .
