Jan Burke

Jan Helene Burke , née Fischer (born August 1, 1953 in Houston , Texas ) is an American crime writer . She is known for her cases with reporter Irene Kelly.

Life

Burke was born in Texas but has lived in Southern California since she was six . She studied history at California State University , but after graduation she worked in her father's business. When the company was taken over by a corporation, she was hired as factory manager. At the same time she found time to write a detective novel.

The protagonist of her first book is Irene Kelly, a reporter from a fictional location in Southern California who is married to the police officer Frank Harriman. In 1993, Morgen Morgen, Wenn Gott Willing , was published and immediately received two award nominations for the best first novel. The series of novels has now grown to ten volumes. Her most successful novel so far was the seventh volume in the series with the title Grabesstille , which in 1999 received the Edgar Award of the Association of US crime authors MWA as crime of the year . Another novel was made outside of the series, The Ninth Victim , set in Los Angeles .

Her short stories are also very successful, for which she also received several awards: in 1994 and 2001 the Macavity Award (for Unharmed and The Abbey Ghosts ), in 2000 the Agatha Award (for The Man in the Civil Suit ) and other nominations for Edgar, Macavity and Anthony Award . In 2004 a collection of 18 stories was published in German under the title Death Sign .

Jan Burke is married to the musician Tim Burke and lives in Seal Beach in Southern California.
