James Patrick Kelly
James Patrick Kelly (* 11. April 1951 in Mineola , New York ) is an American science fiction - writers , who published his first works in the 1970s.
Life
Kelly graduated magna cum laude with a BA in English Literature from the University of Notre Dame in 1972 . His first short story was published in 1975. He attended the Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop twice , in 1974 and 1976. He and his friend John Kessel were involved in the cyberpunk debate throughout the 1980s . Kessel and Kelly are both considered humanists , although Kelly wrote some cyberpunk-like stories like The Prisoner of Chillon or Rat . Kelly's story Solstice was published by Bruce Sterling in his anthology Mirror Shadow.
Kelly has won several science fiction awards. He won the Hugo Award for Think Like a Dinosaur in 1995 and again in 1999 for 10 16 to 1 . In 2006 the Nebula Award for Burn followed . He won the Asimov's Reader Poll and the SF Chronicle Award with other stories . Kelly is a regular participant and teacher in various workshops, such as the Clarion and the Sycamore Hill Writer's Workshop . He has been with the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts since 1998 and served as the Council Presidency in 2004.
He is currently on the Popular Literature Department in the Stonecoast MFA Creative Writing Program at the University of Southern Maine . He is a frequent contributor to Asimov's science fiction anthology. He also writes a column in Asimov’s called "On the Net" and consists of contributions in kind. For over 20 years he has always published a story in the June issue of Asimov’s . Meanwhile, Kelly operated together with his friend John Kessel as editor of Slipstream - Anthology Feeling Very Strange: The Slipstream Anthology , the post- cyberpunk -Anthologie Rewired and the anthology The Secret History of Science Fiction . Through their work in this field, Kelly and Kessel have brought together writers from a wide variety of backgrounds within the SF, including Don DeLillo , George Saunders , Jonathan Lethem , Aimee Bender , Michael Chabon, and Steven Millhauser .
