Steven Millhauser (born August 3, 1943 in New York ) is an American writer .

Life

Steven Millhauser is the son of an English language professor who taught at the City College of New York and later at the University of Bridgeport . Millhauser grew up in New York and Connecticut . He studied at Columbia University , where he received a bachelor's degree in 1965 . From 1968 to 1971 he studied at Brown University in Rhode Island with the aim of a doctorate on the literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance . In 1971 he broke off this course and turned to writing. He married in 1984 and taught from 1986 to 1987 at a College in Williamstown ( Massachusetts ). From 1988 to 2003 he was a part-time lecturer at Skidmore College , Saratoga Springs , New York ; in addition to his teaching activities, he continued to work on his literary works.

Steven Millhauser is the author of novels and short stories that are classified as fantastic literature . For his first work he received the French “ Prix ​​Médicis Étranger ” in 1975 , the World Fantasy Award for The Illusionist in 1990 and the Pulitzer Prize for his novel “Martin Dressler” in 1997 . Millhauser has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1998 .

His short story Eisenheim the Illusionist (published in Barnum Museum ) was made into a film in 2006 under the title The Illusionist . The short story The Sisterhood of Night from the book The Knife Thrower and Other Stories was filmed in 2014 under the same title .
