The University of Southern Maine (USM) is a multi-campus, public city-wide university and part of the University of Maine System . The university's three campuses are in Portland , Gorham and Lewiston .

Originally founded as two separate universities (Gorham Normal School and University of Maine at Portland), the two state universities merged in 1970 to help the flow of the Maine public university system and eventually to expand the university through the Lewiston campus in 1988.

The Portland campus is home to the Edmund Muskie School of Public Service along with the Bio Sciences Research Institute and the University of Maine School of Law , the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the Osher Map Library.

The Gorham campus is inhabited and is home to the College of Education and the School of Music. In Lewiston-Auburn, students experience a small, intimate campus with a focus on interdisciplinary learning. Each campus has its own atmosphere and professors from all campuses have worldwide experience at this regional university.

In 2008, the USM had 8,133 undergraduate and 2,320 postgraduate and law school students with an average class size of 22 students and a student-faculty ratio of 17: 1.

The USM is among the "Best Northeastern Colleges", according to the lists in the Princeton Review 2007, and was also included in the 2007 edition of "America's Best Value Colleges". The President of the USM is z. Currently Dr. Selma Botman, who took office on July 1, 2008 after serving as Chief Academic Officer for the CUNY system in New York. Former President Dr. Richard Pattenaude became Chancellor of the University of Maine Systems on July 1, 2007 .

Portland campus

The main part of the campus includes those buildings that are not residential. Many department offices are in the vicinity of the center of the campus, which consists of residential and main buildings. The major academic areas on the Portland campus are Business Science, Health and Nursing, History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Math, English, Psychology, Media Studies, Modern and Classical Languages ​​and Literature, and American and New England Studies.

Campus in Gorham

Gorham is home to most of the student residences in the university's community sports facilities. The main academic areas in Gorham are industrial technology, engineering, art, music, theater, consulting and education, anthropology, geography, and environmental and earth sciences.

Lewiston-Auburn campus

USM's Lewiston-Auburn campus is the newest of the three campuses, and a new wing was recently built and opened to accommodate its rapid growth. The on-campus college is known as Lewiston-Auburn College (USM; LAC) and is designed to be a national leader in interdisciplinary education.
