The beach ( English original title: The Beach ) is a novel by Alex Garland from 1996.

The young Englishman Richard travels through Thailand with a backpack. In search of a unique adventure, he leaves the overcrowded paths of mass tourism. When he finally discovered a secret beach with the French couple Etiénne and Françoise, he believed he had found his paradise: white sand, turquoise water, tropical jungle.

The three mingle with the small community of "dropouts" who live there and enjoy the idyllic life on the beach from now on. But what at first seems like heaven on earth changes in the course of history into a nightmare.

The novel was filmed in 2000 under the title The Beach by Danny Boyle with Leonardo DiCaprio in the role of Richard .
