action

The filming begins around 20 years after the reign of Queen Elizabeth I began. She is in a crisis. The Catholics want to overthrow her from the throne and she is personally being pushed more and more to marry so that a debate about the succession to the throne should be nipped in the bud. Elizabeth I allows herself to be persuaded by her court staff to marry the Duke of Alençon, the youngest brother of the French king, knowing full well that she is offending her closest ally and lover, the Earl of Leicester.

But Elizabeth I is also more than challenged in other things, on the one hand she has to cope with the armed conflicts with Spain, as well as the conflicts she has with the Scottish Queen Maria Stuart, who in turn claims the English throne. Elizabeth's relationship with the Earl of Leicester is also repeatedly put to the test. After he dies, there is another conflict between her private feelings and the raison d'état when Elizabeth gets involved with the much younger Earl of Essex.
