Les Misérables is a British film adaptation of the musical of the same name , which in turn is based on the novel The Misery by Victor Hugo . Directed by Tom Hooper based on a script by William Nicholson , Alain Boublil , Claude-Michel Schönberg and Herbert Kretzmer, the leading roles are with Hugh Jackman , Russell Crowe , Anne Hathaway , Eddie Redmayne , Amanda Seyfried , Sacha Baron Cohen , Helena Bonham Carter , Samantha Barks and Aaron Tveit occupied.

Early plans for a film version of the musical had existed since the late 1980s. After the concert performance on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the musical (in the revised version from 1985) on October 3, 2010, producer Cameron Mackintosh announced the resumption of the project. Hooper and Nicholson were hired to direct and script in March 2011, and the leading roles were cast later that year. Filming began on March 8, 2012 and ended on June 23, 2012. The film premiered on November 23, 2012 in New York . The official release in the United States was on December 25, 2012, after previously announced December 14. The film was shown in German-speaking countries from February 21, 2013.

action

Jean Valjean is released from prison by Inspector Javert, where he served 19 years after stealing bread for his family and attempting to escape. Years later he built a new life as the mayor of a city. When the young Fantine dies in his presence in the hospital and he is recognized by Javert, he flees. While on the run, he takes Fantine's daughter Cosette with him and goes to Paris with her.

When Cosette falls in love there with the student Marius Pontmercy, Valjean and Javert clash again during the June uprising in 1832 . While Valjean can save the unconscious Marius from death, Javert commits suicide by throwing himself into the Seine. Valjean secretly leaves Cosette because she should never learn anything about his past.

During the wedding with Cosette, Marius realizes that it was Valjean who saved his life, and the two make their way to see him. You can find him in the monastery where he had sought refuge after his time in prison. Weakened by the previous flight from the events during the uprising and the separation from Cosette, he is at the end of his strength. Valjean dies and is accompanied to the afterlife by Fantine.

production

As early as 1988, Alan Parker had been considered as a director for a musical film. However, in 1991 Bruce Beresford signed a contract to this effect, and in 1992 it was said that Tri-Star Pictures should produce the film; however, the project was abandoned a little later. In 2005, Mackintosh confirmed that he was still interested in a film adaptation.

Finally, the DVD or Blu-ray of the "25th Anniversary Concert", the concert performance on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the world premiere of the revised version from 1985 (the original version premiered in 1980), contained a note that there were new plans for an adaptation .

In March 2011, Tom Hooper and William Nicholson were signed to direct and script. In June 2011, Mackintosh and Working Title Films began production. In the same month Hugh Jackman and Paul Bettany were in conversation as Valjean and Javert. Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter were also addressed .

In September 2011, the roles of Valjean and Javert were finally cast with Jackman and Russell Crowe . At around the same time, a preliminary date for the theatrical release was announced on December 7, 2012. In October, the casting of the role of Fantine with Anne Hathaway was confirmed. In November the cast list was expanded to include Eddie Redmayne as Marius, while Lea Michele , Taylor Swift , Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood were considered for the role of Éponine . In December, the casting for the role of Cosette took place in New York City . That same month, Hooper announced that the film would not be shot in 3D and that it would last about two and a half hours. A few days later, Sacha Baron Cohen as Thénardier and Aaron Tveit as Enjolras were rumored for the first time . Also in December, Jackman announced that rehearsals would begin in January. At the same time it was confirmed that the actors should sing live and that the songs should not be recorded beforehand.

In January 2012, Amanda Seyfried was offered the role of Cosette and allegedly Taylor Swift the role of Éponine, which was denied a little later by Swift. On January 12, Redmayne confirmed that Seyfried Cosette and Helena Bonham Carter would play Madame Thénardier. Hooper also confirmed that he would stick to the well-composed form of the musical and not want to incorporate much additional dialogue. A little later, the official website of the musical confirmed the cast of Tveit and Seyfried as well as the collaboration of Colm Wilkinson (Bishop of Digne) and Frances Ruffelle (an "easy girl"). Both had participated in the premiere of the musical; Wilkinson as Valjean and Ruffelle as Éponine. Finally, the cast of Grantaire with George Blagden was announced.

At the end of the month, Mackintosh performed during the final applause for a performance of the musical Oliver! on stage at the Palace Theater in Manchester , announcing that Nancy singer Samantha Barks would resume her role as Éponine for the film. In an interview with the BBC, Hooper announced that Claude-Michel Schönberg , the composer of the musical, was composing a new piece as well as new interludes.

In February 2012 auditions for the smaller roles were held in Rochester and Chatham . A few days later, Mackintosh officially announced that Helena Bonham Carter would play Mme Thénardier and that the title of the new song would be Suddenly . At the end of the month the rumor that the role of Thénardier would be cast by Sacha Baron Cohen was also confirmed, as was Daniel Huttlestone as Gavroche.

Replica of the Bastille elephant

Filming was preceded by nine weeks of rehearsals and Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway lost 12.5 and 15 kg respectively in preparation for their roles. Filming finally began on March 8, 2012 in France. Other locations were Portsmouth , Oxford and Pinewood Studios in England. Within the following weeks, the theatrical release was postponed to December 14th, and the first pictures of the two main actors came to the public. Lists of participating singers who had already participated in various performances of the musical were also published. In April, the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich set up the backdrops for various scenes in Paris and the barricades, including a replica of the Bastille elephant , which Gavroche chose as a refuge in the novel. A little later, Anne Hathaway caused a stir when pictures of her with very short hair surfaced as Fantine sells her hair in order to be able to pay for her daughter.

The special thing about this production is that for the first time the vocals of a full musical film were recorded completely on the set and not, as is usual, sung in the studio a few months beforehand. The performers were accompanied on the set by a pianist who adjusted to the tempo and interpretation of the individual performers. The orchestra was then added in post-production.
