Linzi Hateley (born October 23, 1970 in Birmingham ) is an English actress and singer. She is best known from musicals .

Career

Childhood: Annie

At the age of 10, Linzi applied for the lead role in the film adaptation of the musical Annie , for which her family traveled to London for the first time . Despite successfully completing several recalls, she ultimately didn't make it into the film. After her applications for a stage role for performances of this musical in London had failed, she later at least managed to cast supporting roles in performances in her hometown of Birmingham.

First leading roles: Carrie and Les Misérables

At the age of 14 Hateley attended the Italia Conti Academy of Theater Arts in London, where she stayed for three years. At that time she was also seen in various episodes of the BBC children's series Grange Hill . She got her first leading role at the age of 17 in 1988 in the musical Carrie , based on Stephen King 's novel of the same name , which she played both in Stratford-upon-Avon and on Broadway . However, this opus turned out to be one of the biggest Broadway flops of all time. Her next Broadway (main) role was that of Éponine in Les Misérables , which she played for around two years. Even today, Hately is still seen by many critics as " the Éponine". She later recorded versions of the song On my Own from the musical, one of them on her first solo album in 1992.

From Joseph to London Road

In 1991 the breakthrough came on phonograms. In the new setting of Andrew Lloyd Webbers and Tim Rice's debut Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with the then very popular Jason Donovan as Joseph , Linzi's soprano voice embodied that of the narrator and stood out clearly in pieces such as Prologue and Joseph's Coat . Hately played this role regularly in the musical version based on this arrangement at the London Palladium , which earned her a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award .

In the following years Hately sang Betty Rizzo in Grease , Nancy in Oliver! , in addition to the Éponine, Madame Thenardier in Les Misérables, Roxie Hart in Chicago , Martha in the original recording of the musical version of The Secret Garden , Winifred Banks in the original recording of the musical Mary Poppins and Donna in Mamma Mia! . She also played and sang in the film adaptation of the musical version of the Dickens classic A Christmas Carol ( "Dickens' Christmas story" ). Live she also sang other classics like I Know Him So Well from Chess .

In 2012 Hateley played the small role of a prostitute in the film adaptation of Les Misérables , but only sang in the rather unspectacular song Turning . In 2015 she sang Helen in the film adaptation of the musical London Road .
