Brenda Boykin

Brenda Boykin (born March 30, 1957 in Oakland ) is an American jazz and blues singer .
Live and act
Boykin began singing in the North Oakland Missionary Baptist Church choir and was a solo singer there. She learned the clarinet during high school and turned to jazz and blues while studying psychology at Berkeley University .
She became known as the singer of the Johnny Nocturne Band . She has played at many international festivals such as the DuMaurier Jazz Festival in Vancouver , the Monterey Bay Blues Festival , Monterey Jazz Festival , San Francisco Blues Festival and the Umbria Jazz Festival.
She was the winner of the Montreux Under the Sky competition at the 39th Montreux Jazz Festival ; her quartet was named the best band of the entire outdoor festival . In 2015 she appeared as a soloist with the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg at the gala of the Zelt-Musik-Festival in Freiburg . She is a regular guest at this festival.
She worked for a long time with the guitarist Eric Swinderman , but in 2004 she moved from San Francisco to Wuppertal . She is involved in the German nu jazz project Club des Belugas .

Awards
Boykins was nominated in 1997 for "Best Singer of the Year" for a Bay Area Music Award from Bay Area Music magazine . At the Montreux Jazz Festival the audience voted their quartet as the best band of the festival.
