The Umbria Jazz (UJ) jazz festival is a music festival that has been held in Perugia every July for ten days since 1973 . It is considered one of the most important European jazz festivals.

In addition to jazz , there are also rock , pop , world music and blues musicians such as Eric Clapton , Carlos Santana , James Brown , Alicia Keys and Sting . Jazz greats such as Miles Davis , Count Basie , Dizzy Gillespie (1976), Herbie Hancock , Enrico Rava and Lionel Hampton played here as early as the 1970s . Next came among others Gil Evans , Charles Mingus , Sarah Vaughan , Stan Getz and Keith Jarrett on at the festival.

history

The first artistic director was Alberto Alberti . After it was founded in 1973, there was an interruption from 1977 to 1981. From the 1980s, Carlo Pagnotta was the director, who, thanks to his success at the Umbria Festival, was temporarily commissioned with the program planning at the Melbourne Jazz Festival, among others . In 2001 Umbria Jazz had 200,000 visitors.

Since 1986 the Umbria Jazz Clinics , a two-week program with around 200 students, has been taking place in Perugia in summer since 1986 in collaboration with the Berklee School of Music .

Winter festival

Since 1992, a winter edition of the festival has been held in Orvieto between Christmas and the beginning of January . On November 5, 2012, it became known that the continuation of the winter festival is in jeopardy, as the Italian Ministry of Culture is blocking the funding as part of the austerity policy .
