Annie is an American film musical from 1982 . The film is based on the 1977 musical of the same name, Annie , which in turn is based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray .

action

Caring and kindly naive Annie lives at the girls' orphanage on Hudson Street. While she takes care of her little friend Molly and there are always disputes among the girls, it is the vile, bossy manager of the house, Agatha Hannigan, of whom the girls fear most, which is why Annie during a punitive action Hannigans tries to escape. But after a few hours in the wild, she is caught by the police and brought back. But with Grace Farrell, the personal assistant to billionaire Oliver Warbucks, the hoped-for freedom is just around the corner. Grace is looking for an orphan who will live on the huge Warbucks estate for a week. Despite Hannigan's reluctance, she takes Annie with her. And she feels absolutely at home in this gigantic house until the filthy and nasty Oliver Warbucks appears. He doesn't like it that a child is now sharing his home, even if this is all for the benefit of a campaign to improve his public image.

But Annie feels alone in this gigantic house, so she seeks proximity to the enterprising Warbucks. But even after she and her dog Sandy prevent a bomb attack on Warbucks, he doesn't want to know anything about her and prefers to earn money. Only after a few days does he show interest in cheering Annie up, which is why he agrees to go to the cinema with Grace, him and Annie. You're watching The Lady of the Camellias, a romance movie in which Grace and Warbucks get closer and Annie falls asleep. Warbucks also discovers Grace's care for Annie, so he agrees to her request to permanently adopt Annie. But after Warbucks has forcefully forced an adoption on Mrs. Hannigan, he is surprised that Annie doesn't want to be his daughter at all. She would rather like her real parents back, who she once left in the orphanage over ten years ago with half of a medallion and the promise that they will return soon. This wish softens Warbuck's heart, who is now launching a nationwide search with a reward of $ 50,000.

Given the many phone calls from obviously false parents, Grace is appalled and disappointed that there are so many greedy and dishonest people out there who would lie and cheat for the money. Annie is safe from these false parents for the time being, of whom nobody knew about the trailer, but in the meantime the crook couple Rooster "Gockel" Hannigan and Lily have found themselves at Mrs. Hannigan's, the two with the last belongings of Annie's parents, the years previously died, cared for. With the help of the other half of the trailer, they can prove to the skeptical Warbucks that they are Annie's parents, which pays the reward and leaves Annie with a heavy heart. On departure, Annie realizes that she has been kidnapped and believes she is now at the mercy of the Hannigans, but Annie's friends, the orphans around Molly, have long been on their way to warn Warbucks. He immediately starts a large-scale search and soon finds her on the run from her kidnappers on a raised bridge, where she is rescued by Punjab. After the rescue, he closes Grace and the now finally adopted Annie in his heart.

background

production

Producer Ray Stark was keen to have two directors, so John Huston would be hired for the plot and Joe Layton for the choreography alone. The scene with the song "Easy Street," which Carol Burnett , Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters would perform, was planned to be the largest and most expensive in the film. A special outdoor stage, which cost over 1 million US dollars, was built for the one-week shoot. However, the scene was later perceived as "overloaded", which is why the song was re-recorded two months after the end of shooting.

The film was shot over six weeks at Monmouth University in New Jersey , where the main building, Wilson Hall, was Warbuck's residence. The NX Bridge in Newark , New Jersey, which stretches over the Passaic River , was used for the final chase scene in which Annie escapes on a raised bridge .

Differences to the stage play

The biggest difference between a play and a film lies in the choice of songs. With “Dumb Dog”, “Let's Go to the Movies” (which replaced “NYC”), “Sign” and “We Got Annie” four new songs were added, while “We'd like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover” , "NYC", "You Won't Be an Orphan for Long", "Something Was Missing", "Annie", and "A New Deal for Christmas" were dropped.

In the play, Hannigan, Rooster and Lily are captured by the Secret Service while trying to kidnap Annie at Warbuck's property . In the film, however, Annie is kidnapped and Warbucks organizes a huge search. In addition, Hannigan suddenly feels sorry for Annie and worries about her well-being because she is afraid that her brother Rooster might kill her while trying to escape. Punjab then rescues Annie from the bridge in the autocopter, and a romantic interest is suggested between him and Hannigan at the movie's graduation ceremony.

Punjab and Asp, Warbuck's employees, were reintroduced as supporting roles from the comic book template for the film. And the action was postponed from Christmas to July 4th .

Reviews

“Annie is an almost perfect variety film . It's big, colorful, slightly vulgar, sometimes boring and full of untapped talent. […] Annie is far from a good film, but like the vaudeville at its best, it holds its own flawlessly and tries everything to be worth its money to the audience. "

“In the short description: Annie is fun. It has a lot of dynamism and color, dance and music, sound and anger. But in particular he also has all kinds of problems and I believe the only way to enjoy the movie is to just ignore them. "

“Film musical based on the model of the 50s, light-footed, perfectly staged and choreographed. Sympathetic, entertaining family entertainment that at the same time ironically illuminates the clichés of the genre in terms of form and content. "
