Escape Or Victory is a 1981 US- produced film directed by John Huston .

action

Major Karl von Steiner, the commander of a German prisoner of war camp for British and US Americans, proposes a game between German soldiers and prisoners of war to British Captain John Colby, who was once a professional footballer at West Ham United . When Steiner's superiors find out about this, they want to use the game for propaganda purposes and set up a game between a Wehrmacht self and a selection of prisoners of war in a Paris stadium .

Colby begins training his ragged team. This also includes US Captain Robert Hatch, who, however, wants to use the preparations to escape. Colonel Waldron persuades Hatch to contact the Resistance in Paris , which is supposed to prepare everything for an escape of the entire Allied crew. Hatch flees and meets, as planned, representatives of the Resistance. He then allows himself to be captured again in order to inform his comrades about the escape plan: The team is to escape through a tunnel during the half-time break .

During the game, officers of the SS and the Wehrmacht, including a general , sit in the stands, while heavily armed field gendarmes and Waffen SS with shepherd dogs keep the French audience in check in the standing room. The extremely hard and unfairly playing Germans are at halftime thanks to a partisan referee 4-1 lead. Although everything is prepared for the British-American team to escape, the players decide to stay because they still want to win the game. They dominate the second half, scoring three goals, one of which, however, is not recognized by the referee. The dark-skinned player Luis Fernandez, who has obviously been fouled repeatedly by the Germans because of his skin color , finally manages to equalize 4: 4 with an overhead kick . Major von Steiner, who was drawn as a correct German, also applauded, which earned him criticism from other German officers in the stands. In the final minute, Robert Hatch holds a German penalty .

The French spectators then tune into the Marseillaise and storm the pitch. In the resulting chaos, the Allied players manage to escape.

criticism

“Action film that uses contemporary history only as accessories. Without real tension and only interesting in a few sequences. "

Victory, like John Sturges ' The Great Escape and a number of jolly, post-World War II English films, is not meant to be taken too seriously. It sees POW life as not much different from life in a rather severe boarding school for adult males.

Escape or Victory , like John Sturges' Broken Chains and a number of cheerful English post-war films, shouldn't be taken too seriously. He sees the life of prisoners of war as not so different from life in a strict boarding school for adult men. "
