The Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium ( Hungarian Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium , also known as Új Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium, German  New Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium ) is a football stadium in the Hungarian capital Budapest . It was built in the 8th district of Budapest ( Józsefváros ) on the site of the old stadium. The facility was named in 2002 after the Hungarian football player and coach Nándor Hidegkuti (1922–2002), a member of the Golden Elf . It has been the home ground of the MTK Budapest FC football club from the start .

history

Hungária körúti stadium

Today's Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium has its origins in 1912, when the Hungária körúti Stadium, also known as the MTK Stadium, opened on March 31 with 40,000 seats on the current stadium site. The MTK competed against city rivals Ferencváros Budapest (1-0). Ferencváros gave the impetus for the construction when the Üllői-úti stadium was inaugurated in February 1911. In the spring of 1911, the MTK rented a piece of land on the corner of Hungária kőrút and Temető dűlő annually for the symbolic value of a gold crown . The Millenáris Sporttelep had become too small for the growing number of fans . Construction began in the summer of 1911 after the stadium company had collected 40,000 gold crowns. With the inauguration, MTK Budapest FC played its home games there. The playing field, measuring 100 × 60 meters, enclosed a cinder track for international athletics events . In 1913 a clubhouse was added to the facility . In addition to the MTK, the Hungarian national football team played international matches in the sports arena from 1913 to 1939. On April 30, 1922, the Hungarian team played here against Austria (1: 1). The game was followed by 40,000 spectators and thus set a visitor record. After the damage in the Second World War , the facility was demolished and replaced by a new building.

MTK Stadium or Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium

Until completion, the club had to play its home games in the stadiums of the city rivals. In 1947 the new home of the MTK could be handed over. In the 1960s it again offered around 30,000 places. The attendance record was set in 1963 at a game against the Bulgarian team Slavia Sofia , when 32,078 spectators streamed into the MTK stadium. Furthermore, little happened in the football arena. In 1987 a floodlight system was installed. In 1995 plastic seats were installed in the stands. At that time there were 5700 seats. The official number was 12,700 seats including standing room. However, UEFA only allowed 5515 visitors to official games.

Új Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium

In April 2014, the club chairman announced Tamás German that the MTK 2020 a total of 6.5 billion in the renovation of the sports facilities HUF (approximately 18.3 million will be invested). Including the complete new construction of the stadium with around 5000 seats by 2016. In November of that year it was announced that the Hungarian government is contributing HUF 5.95 billion to the construction project through the National Program for the Reconstruction of Sports Stadiums. HUF 3.91 billion was earmarked for the stadium. HUF 1.39 billion should be available for the Lantos Mihály Sporttelepen sports hall , and HUF 350 million for other sports facilities. The MTK played its last game in the old homeland at the end of the season of Nemzeti Bajnokság 2013/14 on May 31, 2014 against Kaposvári Rákóczi FC . MTK Budapest won 2-0 in front of 3000 spectators. Barnabás Bese scored the last goals in a double pack.

The demolition of the old Hidegkuti stadium began on November 6, 2014. First, the floodlight system was dismantled and the plastic seats removed from the grandstands. In December 2014 the first pictures of the new building were published. The stadium, designed by Péter Bordás (Bord Építész Stúdió Kft.), Should offer between 5000 and 5500 seats and meet UEFA stadium category 3 , which requires at least 4500 seats and 250 VIP seats. Completion was planned for June 2016. The main stand was demolished in May 2015.

The foundation stone was laid on November 16, 2015, the 127th anniversary of the association, in the presence of u. a. Club boss Tamás Deutsch, Attila Szekrényessy, the great-great-grandson of club founder Kálmán Szekrényessy and MTK captain József Kanta as well as Olivér Horváth and Maja Pásztor as representatives of the club's juniors. As the first opponent in the new building, there should be a new edition of the final in the 1963/64 European Cup Winners' Cup when the MTK lost 1-0 in the replay against Sporting Lisbon . The work was delayed slightly and construction should be completed by August 31, 2016 at the latest. After the takeover on September 16, the opening against the Lisbon team should have taken place on September 21, 2016. In order to meet the requirements of the UEFA on the area between two streets, the playing field was rotated by 90 ° at the beginning . In the first plans, spectator stands were planned behind the goals, these were later deleted and replaced with concrete walls. The rotation freed up space on both the east and west sides, which was used for the construction of boxes and VIP seats. It was not necessary to increase the capacity beyond the previous 5515 seats, as the average attendance at the MTK was far lower. The club can generate more income with the boxes than with normal spectator seats.

On December 9th, 2015, the first concrete pillar was set in the ground with the help of the players Sándor Torghelle and Ákos Baki and the player Lilla Nagy . By March 2016, 165 pillars with a weight of up to two tons had been placed for the construction. In July 2016, the work was well advanced. The concrete work was completed and the supporting roof construction was almost completed to the white PTFE - roof membrane to be covered. The pitch was already laid. Construction was nearing completion at the end of September 2016. The roof was covered, the white and blue plastic seats on the two tiers were mounted in random order so that empty seats would not be so noticeable. The video display boards and the LED floodlights were installed on the two back gate walls. The last work on the hybrid turf was carried out with the insertion of the artificial turf fibers into the natural green. The two scoreboards were tested at the beginning of October of that year. Scenes from a porn film with the actress Michelle Wild were shown for around 30 minutes . The operator and the installing company apologized for the incident in a statement.

The new Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium was opened on October 13, 2016, in the presence of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Tamás Deutsch. The first game, a friendly against Sporting Lisbon, ended in a 2-2 draw. The initially estimated costs of around six and a half billion HUF were finally exceeded with 7.26 billion HUF (around 20.5 million euros). Construction was completed in just nine months. A large part of the stadium is made of precast concrete , which accelerated the construction work. Some larger parts were made on site, like the walls behind the gates. They were the most controversial point of the draft. On the one hand, they close the sides to form a bowl, on the other hand, the bare concrete walls are not very popular and are nicknamed the Wailing Wall .

The Category 3 stadium is approved for all men's and women's national teams as well as for the UEFA Champions League , UEFA Women's Champions League and the UEFA Europa League . Instead of a player and coach bench, there is a separate area in the stands. 38 Recaro seats were installed for coaches, substitutes and supervisors. The PTFE membrane is UV- resistant, non-flammable , highly reflective and robust. The smooth material cleans itself with rainwater and does not have to be cleaned manually. The stadium offers a total of 5014 seats. There are 4,189 spectator seats, 504 seats in the boxes, 260 VIP seats and 61 seats for the press. There are eight boxes on the east side. On the west side, nine or 17 boxes are arranged on two levels. In the middle is the lounge area for business guests. There are 535 bike racks on the outside.

On October 22nd, MTK played its first competitive game in the new stadium. In the game of the 13th match day of the Nemzeti Bajnokság 2016/17 they faced Gyirmót SE . The game ended in front of 1183 spectators with a 1-0 win with a goal from Sándor Torghelle. The first international game took place on March 23, 2017 as part of the qualification for the U-17 European Football Championship 2017 . The Hungarian team met Russia and won 2-1 in front of 1,600 spectators.

At the end of October 2017, the Herwart storm damaged parts of the roof membrane of the opposite stand in the east.

Movie

In the 1981 film Escape or Victory with Michael Caine , Sylvester Stallone , Max von Sydow and a number of well-known professional football players, the scenes of the football game were not filmed in the Stade Olympique de Colombes in Paris , as mentioned in the film, but in the MTK stadium in Budapest.
