The storm Herwart , in Poland often Polonized as Grzegorz , in Denmark and Sweden Ingolf , was a strong autumn storm with hurricane gusts that passed through Denmark , northern and eastern Germany , Poland and the Czech Republic and parts of Austria on October 29, 2017 . It caused a storm surge and beach erosion on both the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts and led to widespread storm damage, traffic obstructions and power outages. At least nine people were killed by the effects of the storm. It is considered to be the second severe autumn storm of the year in Central Europe after the storm Xavier (October 4-6).

Meteorological overview

Strong North Atlantic Oscillation ( NAO Index ) October / November 2017: Ophelia 9. – 16. Oct. (hurricane off Ireland), and Elmar 18. – 20. Oct., Herwart 27.-29. Oct. and Numa 14.-18. Nov. (Medicane), always on the index cover

Storms usually occur in Central Europe in autumn and winter because the temperature differences between the polar regions and the temperate zone are higher than usual during the year. On average in the last third of October, the high pressure situations are replaced by cyclonic weather conditions, so that damaging storm situations are more frequent. Herwart was the first strong late October storm since hurricane Christian on October 28, 2013. Although this was largely a much stronger storm, Herwart's peak gusts are among the strongest peak gusts observed in October. In many places they were significantly higher than the values observed two weeks earlier when Xavier passed through.

Structure of the wind field (KMNI analysis, October 28, 00 UTC)

In the run-up, a low moved Florence from the North Atlantic to the Baltic Sea region, which together with a high off Ireland (Vera) with a strong pressure gradient led to storms in Central Europe on Friday, October 27th. On October 27th, it was also predicted that on October 29th, storm Grischa , an aftershoot of Florence , would lie over the central Baltic Sea, but that low remained over northern Scandinavia.

In the cold front of Grischa on Saturday, October 28th, an unnamed Herwart forerunner formed, already in the night from Saturday to Sunday up to 140 km / h were measured in the flatlands in Austria ( Enns in Upper Austria), and up to 179 km / h on the Feuerkogel (Upper Austria) Sunday morning.

At the same time, a vortex formed off the coast of southern Norway, independently named Herwart , which, as a fast runner, relocated to northeast Poland until Sunday, October 29 at 10 a.m. The strongest gusts in northern Germany occurred along the cold front of Herwart. The cold front ran around 10 a.m. on a line from Karlsruhe to Passau and reached the Alps on the evening of October 29, where it caused heavy uphill rain . Denmark reported average mean winds of 24.5 m / s (88 km / h), with the highest value of 27.7 m / s (99.7 km / h) being measured on Rømø . The peak gusts reached widespread hurricane strength; the peak gust was registered at 38.6 m / s (139.0 km / h) in Kalundborg on the west coast of Zealand . The peak gusts in Germany were measured in the lowlands at 144 km / h on Fehmarn and at 140.8 km / h on Hiddensee , while the peak gusts in the mountains were registered there at 176 km / h on the Fichtelberg . In Austria, the afternoon peak values were 138 km / h in Irdning and 132 km / h in Mariazell (both in Styria ), and 173 km / h on Sonnwendstein ( Lower Austria ). The strongest gust of wind was measured in the Czech Republic at 182 km / h on the Luční bouda .

These deep kernels already merged 29th to 30th to a harmless Eastern Europe low.

Effects

In contrast to the storm depression Xavier , which had passed mainly south of Schleswig-Holstein and the Baltic coast, Herwart affected southern Scandinavia and all of Central Central Europe.

Because of the extensive storm warnings, numerous events were canceled.

Storm surges in the North Sea and Baltic Sea

Herwart caused a storm surge in the North Sea and Baltic Sea . The highest water levels on the North Sea southwest of the Elbe estuary with 2.60 m above sea level MHW in Bremerhaven and north of the Elbe with 2.06 m above sea level. MHW measured in Büsum ; at the Hamburg-St.-Pauli gauge , the flood reached 3.34 m above sea level. MHW values of a severe storm surge. On the Baltic Sea, the storm first pushed water into the Skagerrak , then turned to a north-northwest direction and thus drove the water south into the Kattegat , where Zealand and Fyn dammed the water more intensely. A storm surge occurred on the corresponding coasts that would return for twenty years; on the north coast of Funen it was an event with a fifty-year return. In the Odense Fjord the tide reached a level of 168 cm above the Danish zero level (Dansk Vertical Reference 1990); little below the highest level measured there in November 2006 (174 cm). In Slipshavn near Nyborg on the west side of the Great Belt , 141 cm above zero were measured, which was the third highest water level there since measurements began in 1890 - the tide was only higher in November 2006 (177 cm) and in December 2013 (146 cm ). On the German Baltic coast, the water level reached 1.2 m above sea level. MHW.

Several ferry connections were interrupted in the North and Baltic Seas. Scandlines will stop traffic between Rostock and Gedser on Saturday for safety reasons, at DFDS Seaways all connections to and from Klaipėda were canceled on Sunday .

The 225 meter long freighter Glory Amsterdam ran aground off the island of Langeoog . Because of the fuel there was a danger to the Wadden Sea. He could only be towed free on November 2nd.

Denmark

A person died in the west of the Danish island of Zealand .

Germany

At least four people were killed in the storm in Germany.

As a precaution, Deutsche Bahn stopped long-distance traffic in seven federal states, at least partially. Local transport was also affected, particularly in Lower Saxony , Bremen and Hamburg . After it had already come to weather-related restrictions, the Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft stopped its traffic on all routes after a train collided with a fallen tree near Stade on the Hamburg – Cuxhaven railway line . There were also temporary line closures at other railway companies. In the area around Bremerhaven the inland gewehte by the storm, salty air to lead arcing and short circuits in power grids. This also affected local passenger traffic on the Bremen – Bremerhaven railway line , where traffic was still interrupted several days after the storm. Several roads in Saxony and Upper Bavaria had to be closed due to windthrow. The Bremen Airport presented on Sunday evening an operation after a business jet had come off during the landing of the runway.

The storm surge washed away most of the beach on Wangerooge .

In Oldenswort ( North Friesland ) the storm tore off the roof and wings of the listed Catharina Mill . The historic Neuwerker north beacon was completely destroyed.

The autumn storm set a new German record for electricity generation from wind energy with around 39  gigawatts .

Poland

Two people were killed in Poland.

Czech Republic

Herwart caused the greatest damage in the Czech Republic since Hurricane Kyrill in 2007. Two people died.

The power supply was interrupted for hundreds of thousands of households. Trains no longer ran on numerous railway lines. In Most, the St. Valentin church was destroyed.

Austria

Storm damage in the Vienna Woods

The first storm damage occurred in Upper and Lower Austria on October 27th.

In Upper Austria, due to the storm warnings for the weekend and the two fatalities at a tent festival in August 2017, all events in tents were canceled as a precaution. In Austria, cemeteries and parks were also widely closed.

In Upper Austria alone , the fire brigade had around 1200 deployments. Up to 65,000 households were without electricity.

In Lower Austria , 250 fire brigades with 5,000 men were in action within 24 hours, something that has never been seen in this density. In large areas there were power outages due to damaged overhead lines. In Vienna , the platforms of the main train station had to be temporarily closed due to the falling facade parts of a neighboring building under construction, which led to disabilities in long-distance traffic. Many trains from the west were diverted to the Westbahnhof.

Damage and disabilities also occurred in Salzburg , Burgenland and Styria . For example, on October 29th, the Salzburg fire brigade had to deploy to 422 storms after a storm at Maria Alm from 152 km / h. 69 of the 119 communities were mainly affected by fallen trees
