The wooden church of St. Valentin (Czech chrám svatého Valentina ) was an Orthodox church in Most , Czech Republic . It was consecrated in 2011 and destroyed in 2017 by Storm Herwart .

location

The church was located in the eastern part of Starý Most on a small hill on the left side of the Bílina , vis-a-vis the Hněvín (399 m nm). To the north is the Most open-cast mine, to the east is the church cemetery Most and to the south-east is the deanery church of the Assumption and the Spitalkirche zum Hl. Geist.

The old town of Most, which was destroyed in the 1970s, was located immediately north of the location of the church.

history

The church was built in 2010 in a wood not far from the relocated deanery church to commemorate the 40,000 Romanian soldiers who died at the end of the Second World War during the liberation of Czechoslovakia. The Romanian state bore the construction costs . The church belonging to the Prague Eparchy was consecrated on October 9, 2011 in the presence of the Romanian Ambassador Daniela Gîtman , the Romanian Orthodox Patriarch Daniel , the Orthodox Archbishop of Prague Kryštof and the Moster Primator Vlastimil Vozka. Later a wooden summer prayer house was built on the area and the construction of a monastery began.

On May 27, 2014 there was a nightly burglary in the remote church, the prayer house was set on fire and burned down.

On the morning of October 29, 2017, the Herwart autumn storm tore down the church tower and destroyed the entire wooden structure of the church.

Building

The church, oriented in north-south direction, with a nearly 23 m high tower on the south facade, was built in traditional wooden construction based on the model of the wooden churches in Maramureș in the Transylvanian Gothic style. Nails were only used to attach the roof shingles. The oak, spruce and fir wood used for the construction was imported from the Maramureş district and processed on site by six carpenters from Bârsana under the direction of master Ilie Ioan Bența. The brass chandelier inside the church was also made in Romania.

In front of the church is an oak cross of the Holy Trinity.
