The Glory Amsterdam is a bulk carrier that ran aground in the North Sea off the East Frisian island of Langeoog on the western reef west of the Otzumer Balje at the end of October 2017 .

history

The Panamax -Massengutschiff was on 27 August 2002 at Oshima Shipbuilding Company commissioned and on 29 September 2003 in Saikai to put Kiel . The ship belongs to the series of the Panamax type 76 D of this shipyard and was completed on April 12, 2006 as Torm Skagen and handed over to the Panamanian shipping company ND Shipping . Initially, the Mitsubishi Ore Transport Company operated the ship. In 2010 the Panamanian shipping company Flor de Vapores took over the ship and sold it to the current owner company Glory Amsterdam Ltd. in 2012 . in Majuro , the capital of the Marshall Islands . In 2012 the ship was temporarily renamed Santa Teresa and then Glory Amsterdam .

Average

The Glory Amsterdam had 2,017 in late October in Hamburg on to Archer Daniels Midland belonging (ADM) oil mill oil seeds removed and was then to the deep-water harbor in the German Bight leaked, where she had anchored on October 26 to await the next order and To save port fees.

On October 29, 2017 at around 7 a.m., the ship, driven by the Herwart storm with wind speeds of 8-10  Beaufort, began to drive from the north-north-west towards the south-west towards the coast despite two anchors being deployed. It was stranded in high tide and swell with waves up to seven meters at around 6.45 p.m. around two kilometers off the coast of Langeoog. Attempts by the rescue tug Nordic , informed by the German Bight Transport Authority in Wilhelmshaven, to tow the ship had previously failed: in the fifth attempt, the tow cables were on board, but were incorrectly attached; after 46 minutes the bollard with hawse and railing was torn out. In the late afternoon, the Baltic Sea boarding team was dropped onto the freighter by helicopter; the North Sea boarding team was on the Nordic , from which a helicopter transport was not possible due to the rough sea. The boarding team could no longer prevent the ship from running aground. The position is within the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park . Because of the shallow water, the ship could not be towed free at first. The shipping company commissioned the rescue company Smit Salvage , which worked out a salvage concept together with the emergency command . A supply team was brought on board to look after the 22-strong crew. Although no cargo could be discharged from the empty ship, in order to reduce the draft , ballast water could be pumped out. The steering gear suffered a technical defect. In addition to the Nordic tug , the Mellum was also on site to manage operations. The damaged vessel was overflown several times by official Dornier Do 228 LM surveillance aircraft .

The Fairmount Summit

On October 31, 2017, the deep-sea tug Nordic was released from use as part of the rescue concept and replaced by the tugs Fairmount Summit and Union Manta over the course of the following day . On November 1, a line connection to the tugs was established and 16,000 tons of ballast water was pumped outboard. On the morning of November 2, the damaged vessel was towed free. After the salvage, the ship was towed to the Wilhelmshaven Nordhafen for further investigation and from there to Bremerhaven on November 8th. It was repaired at German Dry Docks by February 15, 2018 .

technology

The type of ship has seven reinforced cargo holds with hatch covers that open to the side for the transport of heavy ore loads . The total cargo space capacity is around 90,150 m³. The superstructure and machinery of the bulk carrier are arranged aft. The propulsion of the ship consists of a low-speed two-stroke - six-cylinder - diesel engine of the manufacturer MAN type 6S60MC which in Japan by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding was built under license. The 9326  kW engine enables a speed of around 14½  knots . Four diesel generators with a total output of 1695 kVA are available for the power supply  .
