Otzumer Balje
The Otzumer Balje is a sea gate in the southeastern North Sea .
The Seegatt runs in a north-south direction between the eastern end of the North Sea island of Langeoog and the western end of the neighboring island of Spiekeroog . It has a depth of up to 19 meters and is used by a fairway marked by tons . Due to the different currents caused by the tides , the position and depth of the Gatts with its sandy bottom change constantly.
On December 5, 1917, the steamer Heinrich Horn , built in 1900, sank here , the wreck halves of which can still be seen in strong easterly winds and low water . The Otzumer Balje merges into the Schillbalje towards the mainland .
About five kilometers below the Otzumer Balje there is a 1.5 to 3.0 kilometer thick salt dome with a diameter of 6000 meters and containing Zechstein salts .
