The Nordic is a sea rescue tug that is stationed on a lake position near Helgoland as part of the German emergency towing concept. The ship is considered to be the most powerful salvage tug in German waters.

Construction and commissioning

The construction and commissioning of the Nordic are one of the consequences of the Pallas accident in 1998. In particular, the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutsche Nordsee (SDN), along with many other nature conservation associations, had since then campaigned for a new emergency tug.

The keel of hull number 563 was laid on October 27, 2009 at P + S Werften (formerly: Peene-Werft ) in Wolgast . The sea trials were carried out between October 7th and 12th, 2010. In this context, the Nordic achieved a pulling force of 207 tons (around 2030 kN) in the bollard pull tests in the Norwegian Flekkefjord . The ship was completed on November 15, 2010. After the Nordic was christened on December 8, 2010 by Susanne Ramsauer, the wife of Federal Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer , in Hamburg , she replaced the ocean-going tug Oceanic at the turn of the year 2010/11 , which was decommissioned after 42 years of service. The construction costs of the Nordic were unofficially stated at almost 50 million euros.

Range of use

Owner of the Nordic is the NORTUG Bereederungs GmbH & Co. KG, in which the members of the Working Group on coastal protection are involved. The towing, shipping and rescue company takes over the operation of the ship . The deep-sea tug has been chartered to the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) for an initial ten years for around 114 million euros . Nordic's base port is Cuxhaven . With a top speed of 19.9  knots , she can reach damaged parties in the German Bight within two hours.

The Nordic was equipped with gas and explosion protection so that it can also operate in a potentially dangerous environment .

technology

Machine system and drive

The Nordic machine system consists of the two main engines of the type MTU 20V8000M71L GSB (gas protection operation), two auxiliary engines ( MTU 12V4000 ) to drive the two main generators and another MAN diesel engine that drives the emergency generator.

The main engines are 20-cylinder V-engines with common rail injection and four water-cooled turbochargers each . They have a displacement of just under 350 liters and, with a displacement of around 24.5 kW / liter and a boost pressure of 4.1 bar, are among the most powerful marine diesel engines. The drive of the Nordic is diesel mechanically Flender -Reduktionsgetriebe and shafting two in fixed Kort nozzles current variable pitch of the manufacturer Berg Propulsion .

The Nordic is prepared for operation in an ignitable or health-endangering atmosphere, for example after a tanker accident. In such a case, the entire structure and the machine room are sealed gas-tight. Seawater cooling of the exhaust system reduces the exhaust gas temperature to values below 135 ° C, which reduces the engine output to around 4,000 kW. Flame arresters prevent the outside air from being ignited by the motors. In addition, the motors are monitored and controlled when flammable gases are drawn in so that over-revving is prevented and the motor output is reduced depending on the temperature in the intake ducts.

As of 2015, the Nordic is the only tugboat in the world with an outside air-independent breathing air supply.

Calls

In 2015, the Nordic was in action in the accident on Purple Beach , which it approached within 100 meters under gas protection conditions. In 2017, the stranding of the Glory Amsterdam could not be prevented despite the deployment of the Nordic .
