Majuro ([ maˈd͜ʒuːro ], Marshallese Mājro ) is the capital of the Marshall Islands . It is located on the Majuro Atoll of the same name, which consists of 64 islands . Most of the population there is concentrated in the Delap-Uliga-Darrit area , which lies on the land areas of the islands of Delap , Uliga and Darrit .

The Delap-Uliga-Darrit island group is also (incorrectly) referred to by some, mainly German-speaking, sources as the capital of the Marshall Islands.

geography

Darrit Island

The most important government buildings, churches, banks and authorities are located on the northern island of Darrit, which the Marshallers usually call Rita . The Marshal President officiates in a modern residence in the northern part of Rita.

Uliga Island

Alele Museum & Public Library, exterior view

On the central island of Uliga there is the small but important Alele National Museum with a collection of the typical Marshallese staff maps , photographs of a Marshallese with Portuguese ancestors from the colonial era, and a clearly arranged exhibition on the subject of coral reefs . In addition to a small shop that sells souvenirs, t-shirts and books, the museum complex also houses the National Archives and the National Library of the Marshall Islands.

Uliga is the busiest part of the capital; Here you will find streets lined with shops, stores and offices that may appear almost metropolitan, as the population density on the Majuro Atoll is as high as that of the megacity of Hong Kong . Uliga is the seat of the Majuro Courthouse and the exile administrations of the evacuated atolls Bikini and Rongelap .

Delap Island

The Capitol

On the southern island of Delap is the modern, glass and granite Capitol Building, which houses the parliament and cabinet . There is also a copra and soap factory on Delap that can be visited. In Majuro there is a sports center with a stadium, a few hotels and inns, a large bowling center, restaurants and a cinema with a current program.

Delap also includes four smaller Motus, Biggariat and Eniligere (between Delap and Uliga in the north), and Utwe and Enirak (between Delap and Rairok in the west).

Rairok Island

Peace Memorial Park, memorial

To the west of Delap is the island of Rairok. It includes the islands of Anenelibw and Lokojbar, on which the international airport was built. Close to the airport is the Peace Memorial Park, which reminds of the Japanese occupation of the islands with a monument and green spaces.

Laura Island

Memorial to the victims of the great hurricane 1918 in Laura

Laura Island in the west of the atoll is the highest in the atoll at three meters above sea level. The road coming from Darrit ends there or the road leading to Darrit begins. A memorial, a simple block of natural stone with Japanese inscriptions, is dedicated to the victims of the great hurricane in 1918. It is located in the place Laura. Laura is the center of agricultural production on the atoll.

population

In 2009, around 19,418 inhabitants lived in the urban center of Majuro. The last census result from June 1, 1999 was 15,486 inhabitants for the capital area (Delap-Uliga-Darrit).

In 2011, 27,797 inhabitants lived at the Majuro Atoll and thus in the entire municipality of Majuro, which corresponds to 45% of the population of the Marshall Islands.

history

After Japan occupied the Majuro Atoll until the Second World War (1944), the Americans conquered it and moved the administrative headquarters from Jaluit Atoll to Majuro, which has been the capital since the Marshall Islands gained independence in 1986.

Since the 1960s, shipping companies in the USA and other countries flagged more and more ships. Many of these ships have been registered in the Majuro Ship Register, which is administered from the United States , since 1988 and sail under the flag of the Marshall Islands.
