Shashi ( Chinese  沙市 区 , Pinyin Shāshì Qū ) is a district of the prefecture -level city of Jingzhou in the Chinese province of Hubei . Shashi is the downtown district of Jingzhou and the seat of the city government. It has an area of 469 km² and 540,633 inhabitants (end of 2004).

history

Shashi was not founded until the late 18th century and was almost completely destroyed in the course of the Second World War and the civil war in China. The cityscape is therefore mainly shaped by buildings from the 50s, 60s and 70s, but due to the Chinese economic boom of recent years, some new buildings can also be found. Along with Wuhan, Shashi is considered the unofficial "capital" of Hubei, as the Chinese Communist Party often meets here. The construction of two new six-star hotels in Shashi, the Shashi Palace and the Zhonghua Yangtze Grand Hotel , is also heavily discussed , as the construction of the hotels was heavily subsidized by the state and forced relocations were carried out, including the slums of Shashi many migrant workers and low wages owning large slums have been evacuated. The new hotels are probably mostly used by party cadres.

Problems

The district is known for its pollution, because the Jangtze is extremely polluted in the Shashi inland port, as the district has a large metal and chemical industry, so that dangerous chemicals and heavy metals are discharged into the water.
