history

The institution was founded in 1981 as a non-profit organization . It was formerly known as the Alele Museum, Library, National Archives and also ran the National Archives of the Marshall Islands. According to a discontinued website, the main page of which was last updated in 2000, the National Archives hold about 2500 microfilms . On the current website, however, the function as a national archive is no longer mentioned and the name is now Alele Museum & Public Library . Alele is said to have been in disrepair for several years and reopened in 2013 after an extensive renovation. The name "Alele" comes from a name for woven baskets that were used in the Marshall Islands to store valuable possessions.

museum

The museum's holdings include the Bogan Collection and the Joachim deBrum Collection . The former is a collection of 1940s Marshall Islands handicrafts that Eugene Bogan donated to the museum in 1994. The latter consists of over 2500 photographs on glass negatives that Joachim deBrum (see also deBrum House ) took on the Marshall Islands between the 1880s and 1930s. According to Alele, the Joachim deBrum Collection is the most historically significant photo collection in the Marshall Islands. In addition, models of Marshallese canoes and rod maps for navigating between the various atolls are shown.

Library

As the only public library in the Marshall Islands, the Public Library caters to all age groups and also has a room with children's books . The library's holdings include around 7,500 volumes. The Pacific Collection , a collection of published and unpublished material about the Marshall Islands and Oceania , can only be used as a reference inventory on site.
