The Mellum is a federal multi-purpose and water protection ship . It is operated by the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Weser-Jade-Nordsee . The ship is used as a buoy laying vessel and for maintaining shipping signs (shipping sign vehicle), for fighting pollution accidents, fighting fires, for assistance at sea (especially emergency towing ), as an icebreaker and for shipping police tasks . The ship is named after the Lower Saxony island of Mellum .

Areas of application

The use as a navigation sign vehicle is the main focus of the ship. The ship has five fire fighting cannons (monitors), all of which can be remote-controlled from the ship's bridge .

The ship is integrated into the system of monitoring marine pollution from the air (with Dornier Do 228 LM aircraft ) as a coordination point at sea. It receives the data collected from the aircraft directly to a special ground station and can thus initiate and conduct protective and control measures.

The Mellum can be used as an icebreaker in severe winters when ice forms on the Baltic Sea, which hinders shipping . It is subordinated to the “Central Ice Service” at the Kiel location of the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping . For ice breaking, the ship is equipped with an icebreaker stem and reinforced side wall. The ship has ice class E3.

Construction and launch

The Mellum was built in 1984 under construction number 406 at the Elsflether shipyard . The keel of the ship was laid on August 26th, the launch on December 17th, 1983. The ship was completed in June 1984. The ship has been modernized several times. It was last extended by 7.5 m in January 1999 to improve longitudinal stability.

drive

The ship is powered by four eight - cylinder four-stroke engines from the manufacturer Krupp MaK Maschinenbau, each with an output of 1655  kW , which act on two variable pitch propellers . A bow thruster with an output of 660 kW is installed in the bow as a maneuvering aid. Three diesel generators with 750 kVA each are installed for the power supply on board.

Incidents

On June 7, 2016, the Mellum in Wewelsfleth was damaged by fire while she was in the shipyard. The damage amounted to around 100,000 euros.

replacement

On December 20, 2019, the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping ordered two new multi-purpose vessels from Abeking & Rasmussen . The new buildings will have an LNG propulsion system and a helicopter landing deck . One of these ships will replace the Mellum .
