The shipyard "Abeking and Rasmussen" in Lemwerder , of Vegesack seen from

Abeking & Rasmussen Schiffs- und Yachtwerft Aktiengesellschaft (A&R) is a shipyard in Lemwerder near Bremen in the state of Lower Saxony .

Foundation in Lemwerder (1907)

The company was founded in 1907 by Henry Rasmussen (1877–1959) and Georg Abeking (1881–1970). Georg Abeking left the company in the early 1920s. Henry Rasmussen bequeathed the shipyard to his grandson Hermann Schaedla (1934–2011). In 1987 his son Hans Schaedla joined the company. Since June 22, 2009 Abeking & Rasmussen has been a non-listed stock corporation .

1909, workforce from the "Abeking and Rasmussen" shipyard

The published construction number book records exactly 6481 orders for the period from 1907 to 2009, of which around 40 were not carried out.

The Hansa dinghies developed by A&R after the World War are particularly well known .

Nowadays, large sailing and motor yachts (especially mega yachts ) and other types of ships such as pilot boats , minesweepers or sea rescue cruisers from approx. 30 meters in length are built. This mostly on individual order, partly also in special materials like aluminum.

Naval shipbuilding (1909)

R-boat of the 125 t class

A 4 m boat was delivered to the Kaiserliche Werft Wilhelmshaven in 1909, the beginning of a collaboration with the Imperial Navy , which led to the construction of a wide variety of naval vehicles. In addition to torpedo catch boats, anti-mine boats (M-Boats minesweepers) and submarine destroyers (1916) were among the demanding orders. After the First World War , A&R developed and manufactured the German type of mine clearance boat . By 1945 speed boats and 28 clearing boats (R boats) were delivered. Voith-Schneider propellers were used for the first time in 1938 .

Frankenthal- class minehunter

Patrol boats, speedboats and minesweepers were also part of the shipyard's construction program after the Second World War . Combination of ignition systems in the mines required the development of modern mine hunting systems with remote-controlled, unmanned hollow rod clearing devices of the seal type. The minesweepers from the Frankenthal class (class 332) with a displacement of around 600 t are the largest in the German Navy. They were the world's first surface ships made of non-magnetizable steel. A&R is now the world market leader in minesweepers.

Design and construction of Swath ships (1995)

A&R has achieved a top position worldwide for ships in Swath design ( Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull ). The ships have been developed, designed and built since 1995. The pilot tenders Döse and Duhnen were delivered as the first Swath ships in 1999. The advantages of the Swath design are due to the good sea properties of the pilot boats, both the transfer boats and especially the station ships such as the Elbe built in 2009 .

In April 2010 Natalia Bekker was christened, a wind farm boarding tender that is used for the transfer of personnel to the wind farms currently under construction in the North and Baltic Seas.

Abeking & Rasmussen Rotec GmbH (1990/1993)

Abeking & Rasmussen Faserverbundtechnik GmbH, founded in 1990, was a wholly owned subsidiary. It was renamed Abeking & Rasmussen Rotec GmbH & Co. KG in 1993 and develops, designs and manufactures rotor blades for wind turbines , a special production with roots in military technology with plastic products. In August 2008, the SGL Group took over a majority of 51% in Abeking & Rasmussen Rotec GmbH & Co. KG. After taking over the remaining shares, SGL sold the company to a strategic investor in 2013. Since 2014 the company has operated under the name Carbon Rotec. After the major customer Nordex did not renew its supply contracts in 2017, insolvency had to be filed . The company ceased operations on January 1, 2018.
