The Neuwerk is a federal multi-purpose ship stationed in the German Bight and is operated by the Cuxhaven Waterways and Shipping Authority. It is the largest of the four multi-purpose vessels currently operated by the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration. The ship can be used as an icebreaker , emergency tug , buoy laying , for fighting pollution accidents as well as for shipping police tasks .

history

The ship was built under construction number 415 at the Volkswerft Stralsund . The keel was laid on February 14th, the launch on September 27th, 1997. The ship was completed in June 1998.

At the end of 2002 / beginning of 2003, the Neuwerk was in use after the Prestige accident off the Spanish Atlantic coast. After the work was completed, the ship was cleaned at a Spanish shipyard to such an extent that it could return to Germany without polluting the water itself. The final cleaning took place in a Bremerhaven shipyard.

In September 2006 the Neuwerk was used to salvage a whale carcass off Cuxhaven.

Ship technology

Machine system and drive

The Neuwerk in the port of Cuxhaven

The Neuwerk is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system. The three main and two auxiliary engines drive generators that generate electrical energy for the ship's operation. The main engines are 16-cylinder V-engines of the type MTU 16V595 TC50 with an output of 3000  kW and a speed of 1500 rpm. The electrical output of the main generators is 11,025  kVA at a nominal voltage of 660  volts . The electricity for auxiliary and ancillary operations is generated by two additional generator sets, which are powered by MTU diesel engines of type 12V396 TC54 and 8V183 TE52. The nominal power at a speed of 1500 rpm is 969 kW or 300 kW. In order to potentially dangerous around distressed vessel to operate, which was Neuwerk with gas and explosion protection features.

The Neuwerk is driven by two Schottel rudder propeller systems of the type SRP 3030, which are installed in the stern. Each system has a nozzle-sheathed four-blade fixed propeller with a diameter of 3.00 m. Two angular gears per drive system reduce the input speed of the electric motor from 1,074 / min to the propeller speed of around 200 / min. The ship is also equipped with a Schottel Pump Jet (SPJ) 520 water jet propulsion system. The system is located in the bow and is driven by an electric motor with an output of 2,600 kW at 913 rpm.

The use of this drive technology makes the Neuwerk extremely manoeuvrable.

equipment

For use as a navigation sign vehicle, the Neuwerk is equipped with a barrel crane that can lift between 12 and 22 t, depending on the display. The ship has a total of four extinguishing cannons (monitors) for fire fighting . The ship is equipped with a water spray system for self-protection and decontamination.

Replacement planning

The General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping placed an order for two new multi-purpose ships from Abeking & Rasmussen on December 20, 2019 . One of these ships is to be stationed as the new Scharhörn at the Cuxhaven Waterways and Shipping Office and to replace Neuwerk , which is then to be relocated to the Baltic Sea as a replacement for the old Scharhörn . The replacement of the Neuwerk is planned for 2025.Template: future / in 5 years
