The Mediterranean low Numa , in Italy also Attila , in Greece Zenon , was a storm that led to severe floods in mid-November 2017, especially in Greece, and claimed many lives. With its pronounced cyclone characteristics, it was classified as a Medicane .

meteorology

At the end of October, after Hurricane Ophelia in Ireland , there were more powerful oscillations and eddies in the jet stream , caused by a strong polar eddy over Canada. Shortly after the storm Herwart, this caused a drop of cold air around the 5th of the month , which moved over the western Alps into the Mediterranean area (Tief Karl ). In addition to storms over the Italian Peninsula , the high dynamic of the atmosphere is also evident in a tornado at San Vito ( San Felice Circeo ) and Borgo Hermada ( Terracina ) on the coast northwest of Rome. Reinforced by another drop of cold air that came from the British Isles around the 8th , this small depression led to a late onset of winter for Central Europe, but early for the Mediterranean region. The low then moved southwards on an abnormal trajectory across the Libyan desert , and driven by a south-shifted westerly wind belt over North Africa back towards the Greek peninsula . This weather situation led to the first phase of heavy precipitation in the southern Mediterranean region (heavy hail in Acate on Sicily).

At the same time, a mighty Atlantic low , which had also formed around the 5th over Newfoundland and was influenced by the Azores high shifted excessively northwards, moved over northern Scandinavia into the Baltic Sea region . On the 13th, a third drop of cold air formed from this, which penetrated again into Italy via Poland. The North Atlantic Deep was named Lemmy in Germany and Attila in Italy , the latter name then being transferred to the Mediterranean Deep, which was otherwise known under the German name Numa . In Greece the storm was given the name Zenon . Also involved in the formation were remnants of the tropical storm Rina , which circled the Azores high (ex-Rina) .

The low over the sea south of southern Italy united with the cold high altitude of the previous one (Karl) and was driven by another jet stream oscillation, but remained largely stationary over the Ionian Sea for several days. As a result, the characteristics of a medicane (a subtropical cyclone in the Mediterranean) developed. On its front, there was intense rainfall from Sardinia via northern Algeria and northern Tunisia , Malta , Greece and the southwestern Balkans to the Italian Adriatic and southern coast . On November 18, the deep core hit the Ionian Islands , but then quickly disintegrated and withdrew to the east. It led to storms in eastern Greece and the Aegean coast of Asia Minor until the 20th .

Strong North Atlantic Oscillation ( NAO Index ) October / November 2017: Ophelia 9. – 16. Oct. (hurricane off Ireland), and Elmar 18. – 20. Oct., Herwart 27.-29. Oct. (heavy storm) and Numa 14. – 18. Nov., always on the index cover

The Greek weather service measured a top gust of 108 km / h (in Kipouria ), which actually does not meet the limit criterion of a Mediterranean hurricane of 112 or 118 km / h; Nevertheless, the low with his eye well trained for a few hours was managed by several weather services as a medicane.

The strong oscillations of the air masses continued, while Numa with Scirocco brought temperatures of over 20 ° C in the southern Balkans and in southern Italy, after which the temperatures plunged to below freezing point as far as northern Greece.

consequences

The low led to heavy rainfall in Algeria and Tunisia , Italy and Malta , and particularly in Greece .

Greece

Rain total 14.-16. Nov. in western attica (yellow tones> 100 mm over 3D relief, NASA)

The center of the precipitation was in Attica west of Athens , with over 150 l / m² in 2 days.

Flash floods, there were 15 November in West Attica in Elefsina , Megara , and most extreme in the villages of Nea Peramos , destroyed one-third, and Mandra with most fatalities. A total of 15 dead and at least 5 missing persons were reported in these places on November 16, of which 12 were victims in Mandra alone, where people were surprised in the houses and sometimes washed up into the bay of Eleusina. On November 24, it was reported that 21 dead were recovered.
