The Sonnwendstein is a mountain in the Semmering area near the Styrian - Lower Austrian border.

location

The pilgrimage site of Maria Schutz lies on its northern slope at an altitude of 760  m above sea level. A. Until the 1970s, the old route of Wiener Neustädter Straße (then also Triester Straße ) led through this place along the northern flank of the Sonnwendstein over the Semmering . The Sonnwendstein is the location of the well-visible Sonnwendstein transmitter , which was built in 1957 and is a large-scale broadcasting facility operated by the Österreichischen Rundfunksender GmbH (ORS) and directly adjacent to a radio relay station of Telekom Austria .

A single chairlift opened in 1956 , one of the oldest in the Eastern Alps, and also one of the longest of its type with a height difference of 711 m , led from Maria Schutz to the old Berghotel Pollereshaus. This was just below the summit of the Sonnwendstein, which with its height of 1523  m above sea level. A. offers a beautiful panoramic view, on nice days even as far as Lake Neusiedl . In June 1985 a fire broke out in the bollard house, as a result of which the house, which was essentially made of wood, burned down to the foundations. Today's smaller bollard hut was built on the platform .

In 2005, the chairlift had to be closed because the official fire protection requirements could not be met and was dismantled in the following years. The ascent to the Pollereshütte can be made from the former valley station of the chairlift in Maria Schutz via the so-called Gebirgsjägersteig , which crosses the former aisle of the chairlift several times, in steep and sometimes rocky terrain in about 1.5 hours. From the Pollereshütte you can reach the summit in a few minutes, where you will find a chapel built in 1935 with artistically valuable glass windows. This was built as a memorial chapel for the wife of Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg , Herma, who died in a car accident .

The Sonnwendstein belonged to the Semmering ski area, the slopes of which were spread over the two mountains Hirschenkogel and Sonnwendstein. There has been no skiing on the Sonnwendstein since the lift was closed.

On August 19, 1934, two tourists, the engineer Franz-Josef Jonas and the civil servant Emilie Wessely, fell victim to a robbery on the Sonnwendstein . The perpetrator was arrested soon thereafter, the process in the Regional Court of Vienna Criminal including third murder and robbery in Semmering area found guilty, sentenced to death and executed .
