Ely do Amparo - also just Ely or Eli - (born May 14, 1921 in Paracambi ; † March 9, 1991 ibid) was a Brazilian soccer player who took part in the world tournaments in 1950 and 1954 during his career with the Brazilian national team .

Club career

Ely began his football career in 1939 with America FC in the north of the city of Rio de Janeiro, but already in 1940 he joined the lower class Canto do Rio FC on the other side of Guanabara Bay in Niterói where he established himself as captain.

In 1943 he was brought back by Uruguayan coach Ondino Viera to the top club CR Vasco da Gama in what was then the federal capital. There he played in the defensive midfield and as a right runner and soon established himself as a leading player alongside captain Augusto in the team that was to cause a sensation as Expresso da Vitória into the 1950s. Vasco's other stars in this era included Jair da Rosa Pinto , 1950 World Cup top scorer Ademir , Chico and goalkeeper Moacyr Barbosa , the unfortunate figure in the decider of the 1950 World Cup, which went down in history as Maracanaço .

With Vasco da Gama, Ely won the State Championship in Rio de Janeiro five times between 1945 and 1952 . A highlight was winning the South American championship championship in 1948 in Santiago de Chile , the predecessor of the Copa Libertadores .

Between 1953 and 1955 he finished his playing career with Sport Recife in northeastern Brazil and won two national championships in Pernambuco .

National team career

Ely do Amparo made his international debut in the Brazilian national team on April 3, 1949 in the opening game of the 1949 Copa America , a 9-1 win against Ecuador . In the further course of the tournament, he came mostly at the side of Danilo Alvim and Noronha to four other missions, including in the decider for the title, when a 7-0 win against Paraguay for the third time the continental championship was won. A year later, Ely was also part of the Brazilian squad at the World Cup in his own country . During the tournament, in which the title in the last and decisive group game, which went down in history as Maracanaço , was lost to Uruguay, Ely was only used in the preliminary round in a 4-0 win over the Mexicans. A month before the tournament started, he was still part of the regular formation when Uruguay was defeated in three games in the Copa Río Branco .

Two years later, Ely took part with the national team in the first-ever Pan American Championship and even acted as captain in the game against Panama , in the 4-2 win against arch-rivals Uruguay he was sent off the field for the only time in his international career. With a 3-0 win in the last group game against Chile, this competition was also won by Brazil. For his last international appearances Ely came in the context of the Copa America in 1953 , in the play-off against Paraguay that became necessary again, which ended in a 2: 3 defeat, he was not used. At the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, Ely was again in the Brazilian squad , but was not used in the course of the tournament by national coach Zezé Moreira . The Brazilian team failed in the quarter-finals in the Battle of Bern with 2: 4 to Hungary . After a total of 19 full international matches and numerous other appearances in unofficial games, his international career came to an end.
