Geoffrey Richard Holder (born August 1, 1930 in Port of Spain , Trinidad , Trinidad and Tobago , † October 5, 2014 in Manhattan , New York ) was an actor , writer , singer and dancer from Trinidad and Tobago. He was married to the American dancer, choreographer and actress Carmen De Lavallade .

Life

Holder was born one of four siblings. At the age of seven, Holder joined his older brother and his dance troupe and was tutored in dancing and painting by them. At the beginning of 1954 he moved to the United States. In December 1954, Holder had his first appearance at the theater. In 1955 he married Carmen De Lavallade, with whom he had a son. After that he concentrated on dancing.

Holder became known through the James Bond film Live and Let Die , in which he played Baron Samedi. In 1975 Holder won a Tony Award for best director of a musical ( The Wiz ). He died on October 5, 2014 in Manhattan at the age of 84 of complications from pneumonia .
