The scarlet pirate (original title: Swashbuckler ) is a pirate film directed by James Goldstone from 1976 . The film is based on the novel "The Scarlet Buccaneer" by Paul Wheeler , the screenplay was written by Jeffrey Bloom .
action
The film opens with a prologue claiming that long ago the European colonies were ruled by despots who stole power and wealth from the people. An example of this was Lord Durant in Jamaica in 1718 . In contrast, pirates and privateers who stayed in the Caribbean were enemies of these tyrants and folk heroes, such as Ned Lynch, the captain of a pirate ship.
At the beginning of the film, Ned Lynch saves his friend Nick Debrett from the gallows in a spectacular rescue operation. He then helps Jane Barnet rescue her father from the clutches of Lord Durant. Lord Durant leads a decadent life and treats his subordinates condescendingly and sometimes sadistically . Nick introduces his friend Cudjo to Ned at the market. In the evening, Jane meets Ned in a pub. When she discovers a chain on another woman that previously belonged to her and has been stolen and given away by Ned, Jane and the woman have an argument that turns into a brawl and a saber fight with the cavalry . A soldier tries to rape Jane , whereupon she stabs him in self-defense . Ned manages to escape from the tumult with Jane, and Nick follows them. After they fled the inn, they chase themselves with the cavalry on a carriage laden with bananas. They manage to shake off their pursuers by riding towards a cliff from which they jump into the sea. There they are picked up by Ned's ship.
Although Ned has fallen in love with Jane, she initially looks unappealing. However, since she killed a soldier, it is no longer possible for her to return. When they come ashore, she has a duel with Ned , which she loses. Then Jane goes to Willard Culverwell. When she learns from him that Lord Durant is planning to kill his prisoners of war, she wants to ask Ned for help. She promises him 10,000 doubloons if he can defeat Lord Durant.
They first try to lure Lord Durant into a trap by taking over Lord Durant's camp and taking the staff hostage. Before loading his treasures on his ship, Lord Durant visits the camp. Ned has dressed up in a wig and uniform and pretends to be a warehouse manager. Due to Jane's mishap, the attempt to kill Lord Durant fails. Jane is captured, but Ned and Nick escape.
Ned and Nick ask for help from Cudjo, who has the idea that the townspeople disguise Jane from jail at night, disguised as jugglers . They manage to break into the prison and, thanks to the trained monkey Polanski, get the keys to the prison cells from a sleeping prison guard. Then they free all prisoners and blow up the prison.
In the end they invade Lord Durant's palace. Durant, who is taking a bath, assigns Major Folly to fight the attackers. However, Ned and Polanski overpower him and break into the bathroom. There it comes to a scuffle with Lord Durant, who, although already wounded, grabs a sword at the last second and attacks Jane. However, Ned manages to save Jane by grabbing Lord Durant and throwing him from the balcony.

Reviews
“Old-style, turbulent pirate film. Modernized superfluously in the visual and linguistic details with coarseness.
