(Brauhaus Früh) Em Golde Kappes

Em Golde Kappes ("In the golden cabbage") is the name of a traditional restaurant in Cologne's Nippes district .

history

The Kölsch pub was opened on August 30, 1913 by Nippes landlord Matthias Becker. In an advertisement he asked for “kind approval” at the opening of the “top-fermented beer house”. The name Em Golde Kappes can be traced back to the opposite Florastraße, which was called Kappesgasse before 1864 . The building at Neusser Straße 295 has been a listed building (No. 5095) since June 23, 1989 , because it is a monument within the meaning of Section 2, Paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Monument Protection Act ( list of architectural monuments in the Cologne district of Nippes ). In October 1995 the designation “Em Golde Kappes” was registered as a word and figurative mark in the trademark register.

The name is visually symbolized by a gilded cabbage hanging above the main entrance with a brewer's star attached above . Another gilded cabbage is part of a carved fresco above the entrance. The north facade is decorated with four masks representing the four temperaments: choleric , phlegmatic , melancholic and sanguine . The "Kappes" was never a brewery in the narrower sense in which home-brewed beer was served. Rather, until January 2009, based on a beer supply contract, Mühlen-Kölsch was served from the brewery to the Malzmühle .

As in all traditional Kölsch pubs and brewery restaurants in the city, guests are served by the Köbes . The atmosphere is shaped by a historic Cologne bar, which includes the bar counter (“the confessional”), which has been retained despite the renovation and offers visual contact with the guest rooms. In addition, polished wooden tables, wooden decorations and small leaded glass windows add to the typical atmosphere. The Veedelskneipe has long been known in Cologne and beyond. Characteristic are a " Kölsche Fooderkaat " with food names in the Cologne language and their high German translation. The pub is the regular quarters ("guard room") of the Cologne carnival society Nippeser Bürgerwehr from 1903 , a traditional corps of the Cologne carnival . Since 2000, the vigilante group has been awarding the “Goldene Kappes”, named after the traditional pub, to deserving carnivalists.

New owner

The "Kneip op d'r Eck" ("corner bar") had been owned by the Becker family for generations until insolvency proceedings were opened at the Cologne District Court on September 1, 2008 regarding the assets of the debtor. On November 26, 2008, the creditors' meeting decided to continue the restaurant for the time being. In a letter dated January 30, 2009, the owner resigned all 17 employees working in the restaurant with reference to the complete cessation of business activities by April 30, 2009 at the latest, after a continuation had failed. In June 2009, the former owner sold the property belonging to the bankruptcy debtor to Immendorf'sche Landgesellschaft GbR Alexander Rolff / Philipp C. Müller (managing director of the Früh brewery). The closure of the “Golde Kappes” also hit its former beer supplier Mühlen-Kölsch (Brewery zur Malzmühle) very hard.

After extensive renovation work, which even included the new gilding of the "cap", the opening of the "Golde cap" took place on November 5, 2009 under the new ownership of the Cölner Hofbräu P. Josef Früh KG . Since then, the Cologne tradition has been continued. Even after the complete renovation, the restaurant has retained its rustic appearance. On 300 square meters, consisting of a large dining room on the ground floor and two halls on the first floor, there is space for up to 350 guests. A beer garden with around 120 seats is right in front of the house.
