The Brewery for malt mill is a traditional Kölsch - brewery and restaurant at Cologne Heumarkt . It was founded in September 1858 by Hubert Koch near the Filzengraben, the old location of the municipal council malt mill.

history

The original malt mill was built on the initiative of the Cologne Council, as the chronicler Hermann von Weinsberg writes in his Cologne Chronicle. He reports on the construction: "In 1572, around the month of July, the construction of the watermill in Filzengraben started ...". This malt mill remained in the possession of the city of Cologne until November 28, 1813. On December 3, 1853, it was torn down, as the chronicler Franz A. Kreuter noted.

Since it was founded in 1858 by Hubert Koch, the brewery has operated under the name of Beer and Malzextract Steam Brewery Hubert Koch, Cologne . The Koch'sche malt beer, which has now been patented, is still brewed at the same location - in the patrician house built in 1744 - according to the original recipe . Other beers have also been brewed here, and the brewery has become a meeting point for Cologne residents, thanks to its central location at Heumarkt No. 6. In 1901 his son Jakob Koch took over the brewery.

Under the direction of Jakob Koch, the brewery developed into a popular meeting place for the citizens of Cologne, especially the well-off market traders in the neighboring wholesale market hall.

In 1912 Koch sold the brewery to his nephew Gottfried Joseph Schwartz, ancestor of the current owner family. In 1932 her son Hubert Josef Schwartz, and thus the second Schwartz generation, took over the business until his death in 1944.

The most drastic experience was certainly the almost complete destruction of the malt mill by bombing in 1945. Sybille Schwartz led the company through what was certainly the most difficult time. She managed to save the company and restart production after World War II. She took care of the reconstruction of the old brewery, which was completely destroyed except for the portal. To this day, this portal adorns the entrance to the brewery and is therefore a landmark for the new beginning that cannot be overlooked. Brewing was resumed as early as 1948, although guests had to be entertained outdoors.

In 1960 Anneliese Schwartz took over the management of the company. With the help of her operations manager, she managed to turn the Malzmühle brewery into a healthy, medium-sized company with a good reputation well beyond Cologne. The economic miracle and the thirst of Cologne helped her with this. The brewery became again what it was in the pre-war period, one of the most popular meeting places for all Cologne residents, whether young or old, poor or rich.

Mühlen Kölsch was also served in the traditional Kölsch bar to the then US President Bill Clinton with his Rhenish sauerbraten when he visited the brewery on June 17, 1999 as part of the G8 summit and was accompanied (including the US Ambassador John Kornblum ). According to witnesses, Bill Clinton is said to have said, based on John F. Kennedy's famous sentence “ I am a Berliner ”, when he left the malt mill: “I am a Kölsch”. Another prominent guest of the Malzmühle was Konrad Adenauer in earlier times .

Today the brewery operates under the name Brauerei zur Malzmühle Schwartz GmbH & Co. KG . She brews the Kölsch brand Mühlen Kölsch, which is part of the Kölsch Convention . Today the fifth generation runs the family business. In 2008 the annual output was 37,500 hectoliters . Even bottles of beer is bottled. The Malzmühle is the last Cologne brewery to sell its Kölsch in the 0.5 liter Euro glass bottles that have been known for decades; As part of a rebranding , the label was renewed and an additional 0.33 liter longneck bottles were introduced. Besides the brewery, the beer was served in around 150 pubs and restaurants in the greater Cologne area in 2009.

On May 31, 2013, the Malzmühle brewery opened the Malzmühle brewery in the historic town hall in the old town hall of Pulheim . The premises were initially leased for ten years . With 175 seats in the outdoor catering on the Pulheim market square, the brewery also offers a typical beer garden atmosphere.

The malt mill at Cologne's Heumarkt is also one of the historical “stops” on the Cologne Brewery Trail .

Furnishing

As in all traditional Kölsch pubs and brewery restaurants in the city, guests are served by the Köbes . The atmosphere is influenced by a historical kölsche pubs device to which the counter Schaaf belongs. In addition, polished wooden tables and small leaded glass windows add to the typical atmosphere.
