The beer exchange is a folk festival that began in 1987 in the Leverkusen district of Opladen and takes place there every year; Meanwhile, there are beer exchanges in numerous other cities throughout Germany that are organized according to the same concept and by the same organizer.

concept

The beer fairs always last from Friday up to and including Monday and have up to 400,000 guests. They were originally founded as a supplement to wine festivals. The dealers sometimes offer 1000 different types of beer from all over the world and also other drinks. So it is possible to try African as well as American, Indian or Australian beers on the beer markets. But there are also largely unknown German brands or rare products.

The concept is marketed as a franchise system and beer exchanges take place in Bonn , Düsseldorf , Karlsruhe , Cologne , Leipzig , Mainz , Leverkusen and Mönchengladbach , for example .

History of the beer exchange in Opladen

The idea for the first beer exchange came from the Leverkusen entrepreneur and dance school owner Axel Kaechele, who asked the students of his dance school at the beginning of the summer holidays to bring local beer specialties from the respective holiday countries. On the first day of the autumn vacation, a beer exchange with these beers took place.

In 1987 the concept was taken up by the Opladen Action Group (AGO) and the first beer exchange was organized in the Opladen pedestrian zone. Since 1988 the beer exchange has been organized on the Schusterinsel in Leverkusen-Opladen by the organizer Werner Nolden, who further developed and significantly promoted the concept of the beer exchange.

Traditionally in the last few years the appearance of Guildo Horn has been on Monday evening , the other musical background is mainly provided by Rhenish bands. Young people under 16 years of age only have access to the festival area when accompanied by an adult.
