Lea Michele Sarfati (born August 29, 1986 in New York ) is an American singer and actress . She has appeared in musicals since she was a child , especially in various Broadway productions. In this context, she was nominated for awards several times. From 2009 to 2015 she starred in the series Glee , for which she received the Satellite Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award .

Life

Lea Michele was born in the Bronx , New York . Her parents, an Italian Catholic and a Sephardic Jew of Greek origin, raised her in the spirit of both faiths. She grew up in Tenafly , New Jersey , where she also attended high school. There she played volleyball and was a member of the debating club .

At the age of eight, she made her first appearance on Broadway as "Young Cosette" in Les Misérables . Then she played from 1998 to 2000 the "little girl", the daughter of the character Tateh in the musical Ragtime , which is based on the novel of the same name by EL Doctorow . She played this role first in Toronto , then on Broadway.

During her time in high school, she did not perform, but devoted herself to her education. In her final year, however, she successfully applied for a role in the new edition of the musical Fiddler on the Roof ( Anatevka ), where she played the role of Shprintze from 2004 to 2006. In addition, she embodied Anne Frank in a pure language role in the play based on her diary . Around this time she would have been accepted into the “Collaborative Arts Project 21” of the “Tisch School of the Arts” at New York University , but decided to continue performing.

Greater artistic recognition brought her the role of Wendla in the rock musical Spring Awakening ( Spring Awakening ). There she met her best friend Jonathan Groff , who plays the role of Melchior Gabor. She had already taken part in workshops for this during her school days and played the role in the spring of 2006, first in the off-Broadway production, then also on Broadway. In return, she had even turned down an offer to play the role of Éponine in Les Misérables , for which she had unsuccessfully applied in the past. The role of Wendla earned her several nominations for awards, including the Drama Desk Award . In 2008 she left the Spring Awakening production for Hollywood . Here she had the opportunity to sing the song On My Own as Éponine at the Les Misérables Concert in the Hollywood Bowl .

Her breakthrough came with the role of Rachel Berry in the Fox series Glee , which she played between 2009 and 2015. Ryan Murphy , the show's director, wrote the role of Rachel specifically for Michele after he met her at a performance of Spring Awakening . For this role she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award and the Emmy , among others , and received the Satellite Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award . Show tunes also play here, i. H. well-known songs from musicals play a major role.

In the pilot episode Rachel selects On My Own for her audition , in the midseason finale of the first season she tears the audience to a standing ovation in an elimination competition with Don't Rain On My Parade from Funny Girl . She also sings duets in some episodes with other musical stars who play guest roles; For example Maybe This Time from Cabaret with Kristin Chenoweth or I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables with Idina Menzel . She sings Defying Gravity from Wicked with her Glee colleague Chris Colfer . This duet is also included on the first Glee CD. From April 2010 to September 2011, Michele was in a relationship with Broadway actor Theo Stockman .

In 2011 Michele took part in two feature films: In the romantic comedy Happy New Year by director Garry Marshall , she appears in a supporting role. She lends her voice to the title character of the cartoon Dorothy of Oz , a sequel to The Wizard of Oz . Her debut album Louder was released on February 28, 2014 with the singles Cannonball and the tribute song If You Say So , in which Michele processed the death of her Glee colleague and life partner Cory Monteith , who died on July 13, 2013 in his hotel room in Vancouver , Canada was found. The second single On My Way was released on May 4, 2014. Her first book, Brunette Ambition, was also published on May 20, 2014 . Her second book You First: Journal Your Way to Your Best Life was published on September 22, 2015. Since 2015, she has played a scoliosis student in the television series Scream Queens . Her second album, Places , was released in April 2017 , to which Ellie Goulding and Linda Perry each contributed a track.
