Career

Colfer got his first acting experience outside of high school in 2009 in the short film Russel Fish: The Sausage and Eggs Incident . In the same year, at the age of 19, he got the role of Kurt Hummel in the television series Glee , which won the Golden Globe Award in 2010 . Colfer describes his role as “a fashionable soprano who is very self-fixated and very self-confident, but inside is the insecure and fearful teenager with whom everyone can identify somewhere”. He actually auditioned for the role of Artie , but the producers of the show around inventor Ryan Murphy were so impressed by his performance that they created a new character especially for him. During high school, Colfer was eager to perform the song Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked , but his teachers consistently refused because the original was by a woman. This experience was built into the series.
