Alain Boublil

Alain Boublil (* 5. March 1941 in Tunis , Tunisia ) is a French musical - author .

Life

Born in Tunisia, Alain Boublil moved to Paris at the age of 18 and began working as a music producer and writing lyrics for French pop songs. In 1973 he wrote the lyrics for his first musical La Révolution Française together with Jean-Max Rivière . This work brought Boublil together with the composer Claude-Michel Schönberg .

On a trip to London in 1978 he came across the musical Oliver! the idea of writing a musical version of Victor Hugo's novel Les Misérables . Together with Jean-Marc Natel he wrote the lyrics, the music was written by Claude-Michel Schönberg. In 1980 Les Misérables was premiered in Paris. 1985 brought Boublil and Schoenberg together with Cameron Mackintosh , Boublil the two years had previously met when this him for ABBA -Musical Abbacadabra undertook Les Misérables in London's West End on the stage.

The successful collaboration with Schönberg continued in 1989 when the musical Miss Saigon premiered in London . The musical Martin Guerre , which premiered in 1996, was again written together with Schönberg. The latest musical by the Boublil / Schönberg writing team is titled The Pirate Queen and premiered on October 3, 2006 in Chicago .

In addition to working as a musical writer, Boublil has also written the play Le Journal d'Adam et Eve , based on two short stories by Mark Twain (1994). In 2002 his first novel Les Dessous de soi was published, which was awarded the Prix Prince Maurice du Roman d'Amour in 2003. He also wrote a stage version of Jacques Demy's novel Les Demoiselles de Rochefort with composer Michel Legrand , which premiered in September 2003. Alain Boublil now lives in London.
