Golden Globe Award / Best Film - Comedy or Musical

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winners and nominated feature films for the Golden Globe Award in the category Best Picture - Comedy or Musical ( Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy ), which rewards the most outstanding feature films of the past calendar year. The category was launched in 1952. From 1944 to 1950, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) awarded a film award ( Best Picture ) without subdivision by film genre (see Golden Globe Award / Best Film - Drama ). The award goes to the film production company or the US film distributor .

According to current regulations, the running time of the films must be at least 70 minutes. The productions must have been shown in the Los Angeles area for seven days in the year preceding the award. At the same time, the film must be made available to members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in special screenings (a regular theatrical release or a press screening to which the members are invited also meets this requirement). Musicals are intended to be defined as a comedy or drama in which songs, rather than spoken dialogue, are used to move the plot forward. Films with a share of at least 51 percent of non-English language dialogue or higher may only be nominated in the category Best Foreign Language Film .

Thirteen times the best comedy film or the best musical was later awarded the Oscar , most recently in 2019, with the award of Peter Farrellys ' Green Book - A Special Friendship . Films directed by Woody Allen , Robert Altman , George Cukor , Morton DaCosta , Norman Jewison , Walter Lang , Vincente Minnelli , Mike Nichols , Otto Preminger , Herbert Ross and Billy Wilder received the most awards (two wins each). Between 1959 and 1963, prizes were awarded separately for the best comedy and the best musical, while from the early 1990s animated films such as Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King appeared in the lists of winners and nominees, respectively. Since 2007 these have been honored in a separate category .
