Boyfriend ( Japanese ボ ー イ フ レ ン ド , Bōifurendo ) is a manga series by the Japanese artist Fuyumi Sōryō , which appeared in Japan from 1985 to 1988. The work belongs to the genres of romance and drama and was adapted as a television anime.

action

The student Masaki Takatō ( 高 刀 柾 ), third of four sons, is irrepressible and often gets into disputes. He was successful in basketball but was expelled from the old school for his behavior and fell out with his father. At the new school he meets Kanako Yūki ( 結 城 可 奈 子 ), who has to repeat two school years because of her heart disease. Soon Masaki falls in love with Kanako and seizes the chance to change his life for the better.

Publication and award

The manga was from November 1985 to April 1988 in the magazine Shōjo Comics the publishing house Shogakukan published. The individual chapters also appeared in ten volumes.

In 1988 the series was awarded the Shōgakukan Manga Prize in the Shōjo -Manga category. Boyfriend was one of the series that were made available online for reading on the 40th birthday of the magazine in 2008, some of them free of charge.

Adaptation as a TV special

Directed by Satoshi Dezaki and supported by Yusaku Saotome , Boyfriend was adapted as an anime TV special of the same name . The animation was created in the Magic Bus studio founded by Dezaki . Yukari Kobayashi and Yuji Ikeda were responsible for character design and animation direction. The special was about an hour and a half long and first aired on the TV Tokyo network in the evening (7:00 pm - 9:45 pm) on January 11, 1992. On May 1st of that year the TV version of Toshiba EMI was released on VHS . A slightly modified version appeared a few weeks later on May 27, 1992. On February 24, 1993, the anime was also released on Laserdisc .

Before the opening credits Sotsugyō Shashin ( 卒業 写真 ) was used, sung by Nao Nakadai , which is a cover of the hit of the same name by Yumi Arai . In the credits the title Te no Uchi no Seiza ( 手 の 中 の 星座 ) was played, which was also interpreted by Nao Nakadai.
