criticism

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of December 8, 1989 that the comedy had many funny moments, but was at times so cruel that one could not laugh.

“This story, told as a chilling example by the couple's friend and lawyer, increases almost imperceptibly to a crescendo of increasingly garish effects and ends consistently in the rich colors of the horror film. The black comedy has an old-fashioned moral background, with the perfect staging skillfully balancing the stages of the marital rift between malicious irony and sympathy. An amazing directing performance by comedy star Danny DeVito. "

background

Not only was the film a huge commercial success; in Germany it had four million visitors and the total box office income was around 160 million dollars worldwide. The cost of production was $ 26 million. His title found its way into colloquial German as a phrase for high-conflict divorce disputes. He refers to the so-called English Wars of the Roses , the battles for succession to the throne between the noble houses of York (white coat of arms rose) and Lancaster (red rose) in the 15th century, which have become known as the Wars of the Roses . The English title of the film The War of the Roses is a play on these events.

The film leader designed the typographer and filmmaker Saul Bass .
