criticism
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of December 8, 1989 that the comedy had many funny moments, but was at times so cruel that one could not laugh.
“This story, told as a chilling example by the couple's friend and lawyer, increases almost imperceptibly to a crescendo of increasingly garish effects and ends consistently in the rich colors of the horror film. The black comedy has an old-fashioned moral background, with the perfect staging skillfully balancing the stages of the marital rift between malicious irony and sympathy. An amazing directing performance by comedy star Danny DeVito. "
