The Schreck apartment (original title: Duplex ) is an American comedy film directed by Danny DeVito from 2003 .

action

The author Alex Rose and his wife Nancy are looking for a new apartment. Through a realtor, they find a two-story old apartment in Brooklyn with an old lady as the “subtenant” on the upper floor. What sounds very simple at first, soon turns into a nightmare for the young couple, because the old woman is anything but frail. While she keeps her two landlords awake at night with her overly loud TV, she keeps Alex busy during the day with small repairs that constantly go wrong and force Alex to hire expensive craftsmen. After Alex's laptop, on which the manuscript of the novel he had been working on, was destroyed by an accident, and he was also interrogated several times by the police at the instigation of the old lady, the couple is completely nervous at the end. For their part they decide to get the lady to move out. However, since even a deliberately caused gas explosion does not have the desired effect, Alex and Nancy hire a contract killer, but the old woman defends herself successfully. Ultimately, the two surrender and move out themselves.

It turns out to the viewer that the policeman who interrogated Alex, the broker and the old woman have been playing this game for a long time in order to keep collecting new brokerage commissions from the next buyers. However, the story does not end unhappily for the young couple, because Alex writes a novel based on their terrible experiences called "Duplex", which becomes a bestseller.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on September 26, 2003 that the plot was "too implausible". The viewer cannot identify with any of the characters.

The lexicon of international films described the film as a "predictable comedy designed for clumsy gossip that fails to interplay between malice and amusement".
