Heavy boys - light girls (Original title: Guys and Dolls ) is an American film musical by director Joseph L. Mankiewicz from 1956. It is based on the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls with the music of Frank Loesser .

action

The petty criminal Nathan Detroit is under pressure from all sides. He's supposed to organize an unlicensed game of dice, but Police Lieutenant Brannigan keeps an eye on him. All previous places where Nathan worked are known to the police. If Nathan pays $ 1,000 cash in advance, he can play his game in the Biltmore workshop. Nathan's fiancée, the nightclub singer Miss Adelaide, is tired of continuing her 14-year career. She also wants Nathan to do an honest job for a living. But gambling is all Nathan can really do. An old acquaintance of Nathan, Sky Masterson, puts him in a $ 1,000 bet. Nathan bets that Sky won't be able to get Sarah Brown , who works for the Salvation Army , to have dinner in Havana , Cuba .

Sarah has problems herself. She has so far failed to proselytize a gamer or a drunk. In order to get at Sarah, Sky pretends to be a gamer who wants to quit. Sarah knows Sky's reputation and is skeptical. Sky suggests dinner in Havana if he makes a donation to the mission so it won't be closed. Sarah finally agrees. In the meantime, Nathan, convinced of his betting victory, has brought players together, including the gangster Big Jule. When he passes the mission, the band is playing. Nathan can't see Sarah among them and realizes that he lost his bet. He has no money, no place to play, and is supposed to marry Miss Adelaide. He loves her, but cannot share her views on the way he lives.

Sky manages to dispel Sarah's reservations about him. They start to fall in love with each other. Sky confesses to Sarah the circumstances of dinner, but she forgives him, she's sure he's sincere. Back on Broadway, they go to the mission house. The band plays in the streets all night. Suddenly police sirens wail. The players around Nathan rush out of the mission to escape. Nathan took the opportunity and chose the empty mission as a venue. The police are late. Lieutenant Brannigan doesn't believe that Sarah is accidentally absent from the chapel. This confirms his suspicion that it was all Sky's plan. Sarah now also believes in a game that has been agreed, even if Sky denies everything.

Sky wants to keep its promise to financially support the mission. He is also put under pressure by Sarah's mentor, her uncle Arvide Abernathy. Believing he has nothing to lose, Sky tells Nathan that he didn't win his bet and gives him the $ 1,000. Nathan was able to continue the game. Big Jule used a revolver to force him to find a place to play so he could make up for his losses so far. Sky makes a special bet: if he loses, he'll pay all players $ 1,000; if he wins, players must attend a mission meeting.

The mission is about to close when all players enter the assembly room. Reluctantly, they repent of their sins and show at least a hint of insight. When Nathan tells Sarah that Sky has pretended to have lost the Cuba bet, she rushes to be by Sky's side. In the end there is a double wedding: Sky marries Sarah and Nathan marries Adelaide.

background

The musical on which the film is based was performed 1200 times until November 1953 and won the Tony Award for best musical. Vivian Blaine, Stubby Kaye and B. S. Pully play their stage roles in the film.

Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons had previously shot the historical film Désirée (1954) together. Brando had also worked successfully with director Joseph L. Mankiewicz on the historical drama Julius Caesar (1953). However, the filming of Schwere Jungs - Leicht Mädchen was accompanied by arguments between Brando and Frank Sinatra. The latter would have liked to have played the leading role himself.

Reviews

“Sometimes quite a garish musical,” said Prisma . The film could, however, offer a “[good] choreography and cast”, “even if Brando is not necessarily convincing as a singer”. Another plus point is the "almost ingenious studio equipment". The film-dienst described the film as "a lively and pointedly staged musical with an attractive cast with a successful wit, perfect choreography and brilliant songs".

Awards

At the 1956 Academy Awards , Schwere Jungs - Easy Girls was in the categories Best Production Design (Color) ( Oliver Smith , Joseph C. Wright , Howard Bristol ), Best Costume Design (Color) ( Irene Sharaff ), Best Cinematography (Color) (Harry Stradling) and Best Score ( Jay Blackton , Cyril J. Mockridge ) nominated for an Oscar . In the same year, the film was awarded two Golden Globes in the categories of Best Film - Comedy or Musical and Best Actress - Comedy or Musical (Jean Simmons).

The American Film Institute voted the film at number 23 on their list of Best Film Musicals in 2006.
