Abe Burrows

Abe Burrows , actually Abram Solman Borowitz , (born December 18, 1910 in New York City , New York , † May 17, 1985 in New York City, New York) was an American author , playwright and director .

Life

Abe Burrows began writing humorous and satirical texts for radio variety shows and comedy shows in the late 1930s. He became known as the "head writer" of the radio sitcom Duffy's Tavern . In the late 1940s he got his own radio show on CBS .

His career as a writer for the stage began in 1950 with the Frank Loesser - musical Guys and Dolls . In 1951 he directed the Jule Styne - Revue Two on the Aisle for the first time . This was followed by further work for Broadway, including the Cole Porter musicals Can Can (1953) and Silk Stockings (1955). For the Frank Loesser musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961) he received in 1962 Tony Awards for book and directed as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama . In 1968 his play Cactus Flower , which he also directed, premiered. Burrows also worked as a screenwriter for film and television.
