John Regis Toomey (born August 13, 1898 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , † October 12, 1991 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Regis Toomey was born as one of four children of Francis X and Mary Ellen Toomey in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Initially, he aimed for a legal career, but then decided on an artistic career. He became an established musical performer. He studied dramaturgy at the University of Pittsburgh , where he was a member of Sigma Chi , and eventually became a stage actor, including on Broadway . He also performed as a singer until acute laryngitis forced him to give up during a European tour. Toomey made his film debut in 1929, initially as a leading actor, later as a character actor. He worked in over 180 film productions until the 1980s, not counting dozens of guest appearances in various television formats. In 1941, in the film You're in the Army Now , the actor gave his film partner Jane Wyman the longest film kiss in cinema history (up to 2005) with three minutes and five seconds.

Regis Toomey was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . He was married to Kathryn Scott Toomey from 1925 until her death in 1981. Regis Toomey died in October 1991 at the age of 93.
