The Guilty is a 1947 American film directed by John Reinhardt and starring Bonita Granville . The film noir is based on the short story Two Men in a Furnished Room by Cornell Woolrich and was produced by oil millionaire Jack Wrather for his wife Bonita Granville.
action
Two men, Mike Carr and Johnny Dixon, who share an apartment, meet twin sisters (both played by Bonita Granville in a dual role ). The plot begins when Johnny Estelle meets Mitchell and gets closer to her. However, he finds out that Estelle is also involved with other men and instead meets with her twin sister Linda, whom he recognizes as dear and virtuous. There is a conflict between the two sisters over Johnny. After Linda is murdered, the police suspect Johnny. Eventually it turns out that Mike is the killer and mixed up the sisters.
reception
The Guilty was on 10 November 2015 Museum of Modern Art from one of the UCLA Film & Television Archive from 35mm - nitrate - Dup Negative demonstrated restored copy. With its good twin-bad twin theme, the film was described as a classic film noir material. Produced for Monogram on a shoestring budget, the film was a triumph for John Reinhardt's ingenuity. The critic Dennis Schwartz sees the twin theme, however, in Robert Siodmak's Noir noir The Black Falcon implemented in a superior manner and criticizes the surprising ending of The Guilty as not very convincing.
