action
In New York living successful writer Joan Wilder receives mail from her murdered brother recently from Colombia . Shortly afterwards, she receives a call from her sister, who has been kidnapped. The kidnappers Ira and Ralph demand the treasure map that Joan received in the mail in order to be released.
Wilder goes to Colombia to meet the kidnappers' request. There she meets the adventurer Jack T. Colton, who is willing to help her after negotiating a fee. They are being followed by Zolo, an officer in the country's secret service, who also wants to get the card. On the way they get help in a village where a smuggler turns out to be a fan of Joan Wilder.
Using the map, Wilder and Colton find a large emerald called El Corazón . On the run from Zolo they are separated. In a fortress in the Colombian city of Cartagena , where Ira is breeding crocodiles , Wilder hands over the card and can see her sister again. Zolo and his people join in with the captured Colton. There is a fight over the stone that Colton wore on his abdomen. When Zolo catches the emerald, his hand is bitten off by a crocodile. Colton first helps the savages threatened by Zolo, then he chases after the reptile.
The film ends with a happy ending in New York: Wilder turned the experience into a bestseller, Colton wears boots made from the skin of the crocodile, he was able to sell the stone and fulfill his dream of a sailing boat.
