Back to the Future III

Back to the Future Part II (Original title: Back to the Future Part II ) is a science fiction - film comedy from director Robert Zemeckis in 1989. The screenplay for the film wrote Bob Gale . The film represents the second part of the Back to the Future trilogy . The first part Back to the Future was released in 1985, the third part Back to the Future III was released in 1990. The film opened in German cinemas on December 21, 1989, and in Austria on December 15.

The film tells the story of Marty McFly , who worked with a scientist friend, Dr. Brown per journey traveled in the year, 2015. There the time machine , a converted DeLorean DMC-12 sports car, comes under the control of Biff Tannen (an opponent from the first film) for a short time, who creates an alternative present .

action

The plot begins by repeating the last two minutes from the first part. On October 26, 1985, Dr. Brown returns from the future and asks Marty and his friend Jennifer to accompany him into the future, as it is about their children. They travel together on October 21, 2015 to stop Marty's son from committing a crime with Biff's grandson, which Marty manages after a few difficulties.

In the future Marty will buy an almanac that contains the sports results from 1950 to 2000 because he wants to make money with sports betting in his presence. When Brown notices this, he throws the almanac away because he doesn't want his time machine to be used for it. Old Biff from 2015 overhears the conversation between them and learns that Brown invented a time machine. He takes the almanac, pursues the two and steals the time machine from them unnoticed, with which he gets to the past in order to hand the almanac to his younger self there. Then he travels back to 2015.

When Marty, Jennifer and Brown return from the future, they find themselves in a completely different 1985: Biff has become a rich and powerful man through sports betting based on the almanac and rules over his corporate empire Biffco in Hill Valley, Marty's hometown California , while the rest of this city has sunk into poverty, corruption and crime. Brown was declared insane. Marty's father George was murdered, and Marty's mother married Biff.

Brown explains to Marty - greatly confused by the changed timeline - using a scheme that the point in time to restore the original reality is exactly on the day in the past when the old Biff intervened in time. Marty elicits the information from Biff that he received the almanac from an old man on November 12, 1955. That was the day lightning struck the Hill Valley clock, bringing Marty back from his first time travel to 1985. Since Biff is planning to kill Marty anyway, he brags about having shot his father George. However, Marty escapes and travels with Dr. Brown returned to 1955 to take the almanac from the younger Biff.

In the past, both have to be careful not to meet the other selves because of the risk of a time paradox . This gives rise to some problems and situations in which the new Marty relives scenes from the first film from a different perspective.

Marty can eventually burn the almanac, restoring the original timeline. Before they can go back to 1985, however, the time machine Brown is sitting in is struck by lightning and disappears. Immediately afterwards, a mailman turns up and hands Marty a letter written 70 years ago. The letter is from Brown, which was moved to 1885 along with the time machine. Marty then runs back into town and meets the Dr. Brown from 1955, who had just sent the other Marty back into the future after the lightning strike in the town hall clock and promptly passed out.

production

Originally the script for the sequel to the first part was written for only one film. The working title was "Paradox". However, the film would have been over three hours long and with an estimated budget of $ 80 million, it would have been the most expensive film ever produced. The studio refused to accept either the excess length or the cost of a film, so Bob Gale suggested splitting both the plot and the cost between two films.

As a result, the budget for this film was $ 40 million; grossing was around $ 332 million.

Filming began on February 24, 1989 and ended on August 2, 1989. Minus interruptions, the film had 104 days of shooting, including one scene for Part III. After a short break, filming began for the third part in September 1989.

The role of Marty's father George McFly played in the first part of Crispin Glover was no longer cast with Glover. According to scriptwriter and co-producer Bob Gale , he was too demanding. Glover called in a 1992 interview on the radio show The Howard Stern Show "artistic differences" about the design of the role between him and director Zemeckis as the reason. He said Zemeckis wanted a more docile actor than him. When his departure was confirmed, the scenes with George McFly were cut to a minimum and his role was taken over by Jeffrey Weissman . This is only shown in the film from the side, from behind or upside down (with prosthetic make-up adapted to Glover's face). However, Crispin Glover can also be seen in the role of George McFly, as old recordings of him from the first part were inserted into the film. Glover later successfully sued the producers for using these scenes and for imitating his appearance because the producers had no right to do so without his consent.

The role of Marty's friend Jennifer could no longer be cast with Claudia Wells due to an illness in her family and was taken over by Elisabeth Shue . The then still unknown, eight-year-old Elijah Wood had his first role in the film. He is briefly seen as one of the two children at the Wild Gunman slot machine.

Michael Balzary , bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers , plays Marty's work colleague Needles, who can be seen on the videophone screen. In the third film Back to the Future III , his character then challenges Marty to a car race. Jason Scott Lee ( Dragon - The Bruce Lee Story , The Jungle Book ) played a member of Griff Tannen's thugs.

Trivia

  • The first minutes of the second part, which look almost exactly like the last minutes of the first part, do not come from the first film, but were recreated for the second part.
  • The film shows a scene from a western starring Clint Eastwood . It's For a Fistful of Dollars from 1964. In the third part, this scene is taken up: Marty pretends to be Clint Eastwood and uses the protection shown in the scene in a shooting duel.
  • In a cinema of the future, “Jaws 19” is being advertised by “Max Spielberg”. Jaws is the original title of Steven Spielberg's film Jaws . Spielberg was at Back to the Future Part II as executive producer involved and actually has a son named Max.
  • The 1985 Hill Valley, altered by Biff's influence, is a throwback to the movie Isn't Life Beautiful? , in which tranquil Bedford Falls becomes vicious Pottersville.
  • According to Bob Gale, the character of Biff Tannen as a billionaire and casino owner is based on Donald Trump .
  • The Plaza Hotel & Casino on the Strip in Las Vegas served as a model for Biff Tannen's Pleasure Paradise Casino .
  • In the original language, the film contains a reference to Asphalt Cowboy as Marty Jr. is almost hit by a car and he says “I'm walking here! I'm walking here! ”Screams.
  • In the 80s café from 2015, the virtual controls are displayed on screens as video images of Michael Jackson , Ronald Reagan and Ayatollah Khomeini . This is done in the manner of Max Headroom, who was known in the 80s . Various television series from the 1980s can also be seen there - including family ties with Michael J. Fox and Taxi with Christopher Lloyd.
  • In the window of the antique shop "Blast from the Past" you can see the denim jacket that Marty wore in many scenes from the first film and then left by his bed in 1985.
  • The company Industrial Light & Magic developed a camera system called “VistaGlide” especially for the film , with the help of which scenes could be shot in which an actor appears to appear several times in a scene and interacts with himself.
  • Michael J. Fox had to replay almost the entire scene in which he rocks Johnny B. Goode on stage in the first part in order to be able to show the second Marty at the same time from a different camera perspective. He also had to relearn how to skateboard for the chase scenes on the hoverboards , since he had forgotten how to do it in the four years that had passed since the first film.
  • In a scene cut out of the final film, you can see the school that burned down that Rector Strickland mentions. Another scene cut out in 2015 is seen Biff dissolving while Marty and Doc return to 1985. The film itself only shows how he collapses on a parked car. Thus, he will be killed between 1985 and 2015. There is also a scene with Dave McFly (Marc McClure), Marty's brother before "Biff's Pleasure Paradise" in 1985. Since this part was not used in the official version, the mentioned role does not appear in the second part.
  • In the living room of the McFlys, old Marty McFly plays the guitar riff from Power of Love by Huey Lewis & the News (from Back to the Future ).
  • After fan calls, Nike produced Marty McFly's shoes under the name Nike Mag as a limited series.
  • The second part ends with the message “to be concluded” followed by short excerpts from the third part.

October 21, 2015

On October 21, 2015, mentioned in the Back to the Future trilogy, Marty McFly arrives at 4:29 p.m., California time, in the future, which he leaves at 7:28 p.m. On October 21, 2015, many fans celebrated the day of arrival. There were corresponding articles in the press, in which often the technical developments predicted and the developments actually occurred were compared. There were also many special events on that day, such as film nights on which the entire trilogy was shown one after the other.

In the German dubbing of the film, October 21, 2015 is incorrectly referred to as Tuesday, although it was actually a Wednesday and Dr. Brown also mentions Wednesday as a weekday in the original English version.

As of October 21, 2015, the Cubs were actually among the last four remaining teams in the 2015 Major League Baseball season , but were eliminated on that day by the New York Mets . A year later, on November 2, 2016, the Cubs won the World Series after seven finals against the Cleveland Indians .

Comparison between film and reality

Inventions that existed in the fictional year 2015 but did not actually occur are flying cars and flying skateboards ( hoverboards ) or shoes that lace themselves. In contrast, flat screens , video telephones (see e.g. Skype ) and portable telephones for everyone (see smartphones ) have indeed become common. Asian countries (e.g. People's Republic of China , Japan ) have also become very important in the global economy. The Internet is not mentioned in the film ; instead, the fax is of great importance there.

Numerous web videos appeared on the Internet that deal with the journey through time to 2015. Marty and Dr. Brown discuss e.g. For example, in the short film “Fueled by the Future” about things that actually occurred and shown in the film, but also about flying cars and hoverboards.

Reviews

"Amazing tricks, loving details and skilful dramaturgy make the film a largely untroubled pleasure, which, however, clearly drops towards the end and postpones the resolution of the tricky story to the third part."
