Nike Mag

Nike Mag is a model of sneakers from Nike .

They are a replica of the shoes of the film character Marty McFly from the movie Back to the Future II . The shoes are illuminated with LEDs and have an automated closure. They were invented by Nike designer Tinker Hatfield for the film in 1989. The model at that time was not ready for the market and only worked as a prop. Over 15 years later, fans started a petition to bring the McFly shoes to market.

In 2011 the first edition of Nike Mag, limited to 1510 pieces, was released. It was created in collaboration with shoe designer Tiffany Beers . The built-in, rechargeable batteries can supply the illuminated surfaces of the shoe with power for up to 3000 hours. The automated locking function was not yet implemented here. The shoes were auctioned (1500 pieces on September 8, 2011 on ebay and another 10 in deluxe packaging at another auction). Buyers paid up to $ 9,959 for a pair of Nike MAGs. The owners of the special edition include celebrities such as singer Kanye West and US baseball player Brian Wilson . It generated revenues totaling almost 6 million US dollars. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and his wife Anne Wojcicki doubled the amount of the online auction to 9.4 million US dollars. All proceeds went to the Michael J. Fox Foundation . Former actors from the film, such as Christopher Lloyd , also took part in the campaign .

On October 4, 2016, the 2016 Nike Mag model with self-binding function (called "Adaptive Fit" by the manufacturer) was officially presented in a limited number of 89 pieces. Most of the shoes were raffled off in a competition, and three pairs were auctioned off. All sales proceeds will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
