Reston is a community-free planned town in western Fairfax County , Virginia . In 2010 a census showed a total population of 58,404 inhabitants. Although comparatively small, Reston is the seat of the American Society of Civil Engineers , the National Wildlife Federation , the US Geological Survey and the BwKdo US / CA .

Reston tries to adhere to a strict zoning plan, in which even the color and paint manufacturer for house cladding are prescribed in detail. A “Design Review Board” acts as the approval authority for changes. However, due to the time-consuming bureaucratic process required for approval by the body, many residents ignore the official regulation.

The city is the seat of the Bundeswehr administrative center for the USA and Canada .

history

Lake Anne Plaza in Reston

Reston was designed as a planned town by real estate entrepreneur Robert E. Simon (1914–2015) and named after his initials on his 50th birthday, April 17, 1964. Reston is the first planned city built in the USA after the Second World War , which resulted in a revival of the planned city concept ( New Urbanism ). Simon's planning provided for the use of building complexes with high residential density to maintain large, open areas. These areas should then be used for various purposes, such as use by business, industry, but also education and leisure activities. The first section built, Anne Plaza Lake, was modeled on a European settlement built on a lake. Through this careful planning, Reston received large wooded areas and various streams, but no floodplains, as Reston was built in the middle of oak, maple, sycamore and Virginia pine forests.

In 1989, monkeys imported from the Philippines and billeted in the Hazleton Research Products (HRP) primate quarantine station showed signs of hemorrhagic fever . The cause was initially suspected to be the Simian virus, which is devastating to monkeys but harmless to humans. After sending a sample to USAMRIID , the inducing virus turned out to be the much more dangerous Ebola . The previously unknown strain found here differs from the other Filoviridae because, unlike them, it does not have any pathogenic effects on humans. This strain was named as Ebola Reston. Based on this incident, Richard Preston later authored the book Hot Zone , which National Geographic made into a mini-series in 2019 as The Hot Zone .

On 21 October 2015, the city called the occasion of the journey of Marty McFly to this date in the movie Back to the Future Part II in Hill Valley has to offer.
