action

Arthur is a spoiled multimillionaire son who has never worked in his life. He grew up under the care of his old butler Hobson, but he is terribly bored. He drinks out of loneliness and discouragement. His father wants him to marry Susan Johnson. She is the only daughter of a business friend who has not earned his millions from legal business, but Arthur does not want to marry this woman. Both father and grandmother Martha threaten to disinherit him. For Arthur this would mean the end of his debauchery, especially since he is not prepared to make a living on his own. It also meant a loss of $ 750 million - Arthur agrees.

While shopping at a New York men's outfitter, Arthur observes the shoplifter Linda Marolla and saves her from the department store detective. He falls in love with the uncomplicated girl. For the first time in his life, he seems happy. They meet regularly, but the engagement and wedding dates with Susan Johnson are looming. The violent father of the bride Burt Johnson threatens him: Should he make his daughter unhappy, he would kill him with his own hands. Since not only his life is threatened, but also the millions, he decides to tell Linda the truth. The relationship with Linda seems to break.

Butler Hobson sees in the love conflict that Arthur finally seems to be growing up. He meets with Linda and wants her to show up at the engagement party. At the party Arthur realizes that only Linda is an option for him, but that he has to continue playing the masquerade with Susan. But suddenly he is informed by his chauffeur that Butler Hobson has been admitted to the hospital. Arthur throws himself into a meaningful task for the first time in his life: he takes care of the terminally ill old man. He realizes that Hobson is closer to him than his own father.

Hobson dies. With the wedding imminent, Arthur knows there is no way he can marry Susan. In the church the wedding party is waiting for the groom - he finally appears, but is drunk. He declares the wedding theater over. Burt Johnson beats up Arthur, and Grandma Martha just manages to prevent him from stabbing him. Arthur now knows that he would forego even his millions to live with Linda.

Reviews

“The turbulent […] film […] lives mainly from its actors; remarkable: John Gielgud as butler. "

“The girl is Liza Minnelli, neither young nor beautiful, who gives the film a profile with her profile. Her partner is Dudley Moore, who stumbled away Bo Derek as "dream woman" the show. His nervous slapstick elegance makes the rich drunkard not only bearable, but also adorably funny. At least in the original sound, because in the German version you have to get used to Arthur speaking as you would have to imagine Harald Juhnke in a Böblingen hotel when the Jägermeister is finally all gone. "

- Der Spiegel : 5/1982
  • Liza Minnelli also attracted attention, whose "lively personality and appealing craziness" are "perfect for the role" according to the Hollywood Reporter . The New York Times praised Minnelli's "abundant comic and safe performance" which, along with Moore, played "with an attractive exhilaration."

At the Golden Globe Award ceremony in 1982, the film was the most successful comedy of the year. He received the main prize in the musical / comedy category.
