Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (. English for " Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ") is a drama - thriller film by Quentin Tarantino from the year 2019. Tarantino wrote the screenplay and directed. The main roles were played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate .

The film premiered on May 21, 2019 at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d' Or. Tarantino's directorial work was originally scheduled to start in US cinemas on August 9, 2019, the 50th anniversary of the death of actress Sharon Tate , but started two weeks earlier on July 26, 2019. In Germany, the film was released on August 15, 2019.

action

Los Angeles , February 1969: Actor Rick Dalton, who became a television star in the 1950s with the western series Bounty Law , tells his best friend and stunt double, Cliff Booth, that he is worried about his career because he was only interested in the role of Villains being occupied. Booth, a war veteran who lives in a trailer with his pit bull Brandy , drives Dalton through town and assists him with all kinds of work, as he allegedly killed his wife and cannot find any other jobs as a result. At the same time, actress Sharon Tate and her husband Roman Polański move into Dalton's house next door. Dalton imagines how he could befriend the couple and refresh his career as a result. That same evening, Tate and Polański attended a party at the Playboy Mansion with Jay Sebring , attended by numerous other celebrities such as Steve McQueen .

The next morning, Booth repairs an antenna on Dalton's roof, recalling a friendship fight he had with Bruce Lee on the set of The Green Hornet . Meanwhile he sees an unknown man, Charles Manson , ringing the neighbors' doorbell and asking for the music producer Terry Melcher . Sebring explains to him that Melcher moved out a long time ago and that the house is now inhabited by Polański and Tate.

In the meantime, Tate attends a screening of Rollkommando , a film in which she plays herself. She introduces herself to the box office as a starring actress and is then invited to watch for free. During the performance, she enjoys the positive reactions from the audience to her scenes. Dalton is meanwhile on the set of Lancer , a western series in which he got the role of the villain as usual and was somewhat reluctantly convinced by the director Sam Wanamaker to be dressed in the role like a western hippie. In one scene the hungover actor forgets the text several times, then suffers a breakdown in his trailer, but then returns emotionally charged for the next scene and delivers an impressive performance for which he is highly praised.

Later that day, Cliff Booth drives Dalton's car through Los Angeles and picks up the hitchhiker "Pussycat", who lets him drive her to the Spahn ranch. Booth knows the Spahn Ranch from before. It served as the western setting for Bounty Law and is now inhabited by Pussycat and her friends. Pussycat tries to get Booth to stay, but Booth finds it noticeable that the ranch is inhabited by so many hippies . He wants to speak to the owner, George Spahn, to make sure that he is doing well and is not being exploited or deceived by the group. The situation comes to a head when “Squeaky” doesn't want to let him see Spahn at first. After Booth has asserted himself and spoke to Spahn, who is now blind, he goes back to his car. The front tire has since been stabbed by a member of the group. Cliff hits him and forces him to change the tire. Tex, one of the leaders, is alerted and tries to stop Booth, but is late.

Producer Marvin Schwarz watches an episode of the FBI series in which Dalton has a guest role. He then offers Rick the lead role in a spaghetti western . Dalton, put off by the quality of such films, reluctantly agrees and then takes Cliff to Italy for six months . There he made a total of four films, including Nebraska Jim by Sergio Corbucci , and married Francesca, an Italian.

After returning to Los Angeles together in August, Dalton tells Booth that he can no longer pay him. Both get drunk goodbye and return to Rick's house. While Dalton is mixing himself a cocktail , Booth takes his dog for a walk. In the meantime, four of Pussycat's friends, members of the Manson Family , have positioned themselves in front of the neighboring property and want to kill everyone present. Dalton comes out of his house angry, disturbed by the loud noise of the engine, and in an aggressive tone asks the group to leave the private street. The group then retreats to the main street, deliberates and decides to kill everyone in Dalton's house.

Booth is now back in the house and, intoxicated by an LSD cigarette, is preparing food for his dog. Dalton lies in his pool with headphones on and listens to music while his wife recovers from jet lag in the bedroom . Three members of the Manson group - the man Tex and the women Sadie and Katie - are now moving towards Dalton's house armed, while the fourth member, Linda, has fled. The others break into Dalton's house, where they meet Booth. He recognizes the group from his visit to the Spahn ranch. Tex threatens him with a revolver, which Booth, who is intoxicated, does not take seriously. At Booth's signal, his pit bull jumps at the leader and bites into him. Booth and the dog kill Tex and one of the women with the help of Francesca, who has been woken up by the noise, and seriously injure the other woman. Booth himself is injured with a knife. The remaining attacker staggers badly injured and screaming loudly in pain and terror with the revolver on the terrace to Dalton, who has not noticed anything of the violence. When she rushes into the pool, shooting wildly, he takes a flamethrower from the shed, a prop from one of his films, and uses it to kill the attacker.

After the police arrive, Booth is taken to the hospital. Sebring comes out of the house and asks Dalton what happened that evening. Then he and Sharon Tate invite Rick to the house, where he also meets Wojciech Frykowski and Abigail Folger . In the credits you can see Rick Dalton making commercials for cigarettes.

production

History and staff

On July 11, 2017, it was announced that Quentin Tarantino had written the script for a film about the murders of the Manson family and would direct it as his next film project. The first actors Tarantino approached were Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence . In addition, Samuel L. Jackson and Margot Robbie were traded as names for larger roles. In April 2018, Tarantino said at a meeting of US cinema owners in Las Vegas that this film would be the closest of all his films to his cult film Pulp Fiction .

He also predicted that his two main characters would be "the most exciting dynamic star duo since Paul Newman and Robert Redford". He went on to explain that the action will take place in Los Angeles in 1969, "at the time of the hippie revolution and at the height of 'New Hollywood'". According to earlier reports, the series of murders instigated by Charles Manson , which among others fell victim to actress Sharon Tate, should also appear in the film . Tate was murdered in her home on Cielo Drive in Beverly Hills.

Because of the Harvey Weinstein abuse scandal , Tarantino turned away from the Weinstein Company , which had produced his previous films, and looked for a new production company. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that DiCaprio would play a leading role in the film, as would Brad Pitt. DiCaprio and Pitt have already appeared in the director's previous films: DiCaprio worked with Tarantino in Django Unchained , Pitt starred in Inglourious Basterds . Because of the Weinstein scandal, Tarantino also included a new scene in the film in which Pitt as Cliff Booth speaks to the hitchhiker "Pussycat" on the subject of abuse of minors . In addition to Tarantino, David Heyman and Shannon McIntosh, who had previously worked with him, joined the project as producers. On November 11, 2017, Sony was announced as the distribution studio. As part of the deal, Tarantino is expected to transfer all rights 10 to 20 years after publication.

Occupation and preparation

The main actors and the director Quentin Tarantino in Berlin.

In January 2018, DiCaprio finally signed for the lead role of western actor Rick Dalton, for which he waived part of his usual fee. Due to scheduling difficulties, Brad Pitt was finally hired for the role of Dalton's stunt double Cliff Booth, for which Tom Cruise was originally intended. It was also revealed that Tarantino had written the role of Dalton's agent Marvin Schwarz exclusively for Al Pacino, who had already been signed the month before. It is Pacino's first collaboration with Tarantino. On February 28, 2018, the title of the film with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was announced. In March, Margot Robbie was signed as Sharon Tate, while Zoë Bell confirmed her involvement in the film. Tim Roth, Kurt Russell and Michael Madsen joined the cast in May 2018 . For the three, who only play small roles, it is again a collaboration with Tarantino, as it is for Bell. This was followed by Timothy Olyphant before in June with the cast Damian Lewis , Emile Hirsch , Luke Perry , Nicholas Hammond , Keith Jefferson , Dakota Fanning , junior Clifton Collins , James Marsden , Scoot McNairy and Julia Butters much of the cast was completed. Dakota Fanning stars as Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme , a member of the Manson family, and Nicholas Hammond as director Sam Wanamaker . On August 15, 2018, it was announced that martial arts actor Mike Moh had been cast for the role of martial arts icon Bruce Lee .

At the end of August 2018, other actors in various roles became known. The Australian Damon Herriman plays the role of the mass murderer and cult leader Charles Manson , while the Pole Rafał Zawierucha portrays the director and husband of the late Sharon Tate , Roman Polański .

Burt Reynolds was slated for the role of George Spahn, but he died on September 6, 2018 before filming began. The role was taken over by Bruce Dern at the end of September 2018 , who had already starred in Tarantino's previous two films.

Filming

Filming began on June 18, 2018 in Los Angeles, where the film was based in the 1960s and 1970s. The first images were presented at the end of June 2018. Recordings were made in Los Angeles in July 2018. At the beginning of August 2018 Robbie posted the first set photos of herself in her role of Tate via Instagram . The shooting is said to have ended in November 2018.

The cameraman was the three-time Oscar- winning Robert Richardson , whose services Tarantino has been using regularly since Kill Bill - Volume 1 and who was nominated for an Oscar three times as part of this collaboration ( Inglourious Basterds , Django Unchained , The Hateful Eight ).

publication

The first trailer was released on March 20, 2019, and another on May 21, 2019. The premiere of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took place on May 21, 2019 at the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival , where it competed for the Golden Palm was represented. The film was submitted after post-production had not yet been completed when the official festival program was presented in April 2019 . According to the film festival, Tarantino spent four months in the editing room to finish Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on time. 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of Tarantino's directorial work Pulp Fiction at the 1994 Festival .

Sony Pictures originally planned to release the film in US theaters on August 9, 2019, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Tate murders , which, however, met with heavy criticism in the US. The US theatrical release was therefore brought forward to July 26, 2019. A first film poster was presented on March 18, 2019. In Germany, the film opened in cinemas on August 15, 2019. A release on the Chinese film market, which was scheduled for October 25, 2019, was postponed indefinitely around a week before the theatrical release.

Since Tarantino had shot a huge amount of material for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood , many scenes and even entire guest appearances (including by Tim Roth ) fell victim to the cut in the 161-minute long theatrical version . Therefore, according to Nicholas Hammond, who plays director Sam Wanamaker in the film, there should be talks about releasing a four-hour cut of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as a mini-series on the streaming provider Netflix . This has already been done with Tarantino's previous film The Hateful 8 . There is a miniseries version of the work in the US catalog of Netflix.

reception

Reviews

The film convinced 85 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.84 out of a possible 10 points.

Pascal Blum said in his review in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that for Tarantino the “weight of reality could become almost too heavy”, but he played through the topic of closeness and distance nicely. "Just as Dalton's roles are becoming more ambitious, Quentin Tarantino confidently varies the genres and camera movements while maintaining a relaxed rhythm, as if the film would like to watch the film itself." Blum also recognizes a closeness to Inglourious Basterds in the film , because it is Tarantino was "aiming for the explosive mixture of TV cowboys and real outlaws". He replied with the weapons of entertainment, in the end of the violent scene he overwrites, "similar to Inglourious Basterds , the story of real horror with a pop culture script" in which "the actors make their characters their own again."

In her review at Spiegel Online , Hannah Pilarczyk sees the film as "great, meaningless fun" because she thinks that the film is so poor in points, but one does not notice it for a long time because it is so rich in points. In the home straight, the film soars into a heroic deed that is utterly presumptuous - almost as presumptuous as its rewriting of the Holocaust in Inglourious Basterds or the story of the liberation of slaves in Django Unchained . Tarantino just wanted to save them all - Jews, blacks, women.

Thomas Assheuer describes the film as a “masterpiece” at that time : He holds up a mirror to America today and shows the split between the culture industry and its senseless images of violence and the reality that cinema denies. This split is reflected in the two protagonists: the actor, who is visible on the screen and the screen and speaks nonsense texts, and the invisible stuntman who ingloriously holds out his body for it. Why Tarantino in the climax of the film "sadistically exaggerates the avenging violence in a spectacular excess" remains incomprehensible. The end of the film, however, is deeply human and exercises "a justice that is out of this world [...] pure cinema metaphysics and a great presumption in addition".

In the taz , Fabian Tietke praised the film as a “swan song for the golden age of the Hollywood Western”, which Tarantino was singing with the means of New Hollywood . The film has lengths because the plot is quite sparse, but overall it is always best when he doesn't care about her at all. The film vacillates between this "beautiful freedom" and the bombast of its equipment. As an author's film , Once Upon a Time in Hollywood appears in the "superhero pulp of the current production landscape [...] liberating, especially in its imbalance".

Gross profit

The budget of around 90 million US dollars is offset by worldwide revenues of 374.34 million US dollars, of which the film alone grossed 142.50 million in North America. In Germany, the film recorded 1,888,132 admissions, grossing 18.62 million euros and making it to number 13 in the 2019 annual charts .

Trivia

  • As in Inglourious Basterds , the fictional plot takes place in a real setting. Once again, the cinematic developments deviate significantly from reality through the actions of the fictional characters. The members of the Manson family break into Rick Dalton's villa instead of Roman Polansi's villa , but die themselves in the process, while Sharon Tate and her friends survive.
  • While Leonardo DiCaprio or Rick Dalton , in short sequences of u. a. Broken chains and FBI digitally inserted, the role of Sharon Tate in rolling command remained with the original recordings.
  • The series Bounty Law with leading actor and stuntman is an invention; the filming location Spahn-Ranch owned by George Spahn (1889–1974), however, is a reality as a Movie Ranch and temporary residence of the Manson Family.
  • The characters smoke Red Apple brand cigarettes . This brand was invented by Tarantino for his films and was featured repeatedly in his works.
  • According to Marvin Schwarz , Sergio Corbucci is the "second best director of spaghetti westerns ". Probably the best here should be Sergio Leone , of whose work Tarantino is an avowed fan. Of his films come Once Upon a Time in the West (ger .: Once Upon a Time in the West , 1968) and Once Upon a Time in America (ger .: Once Upon a Time in America , 1984).
  • As a director of Rick Dalton film operation Dyn-O-Mite is Antonio Margheriti called. In Inglourious Basterds , Tarantino already used this name as an alias for Sgt. Donny Donnowitz during the cinema mission, for which the Basterds disguise themselves as the Italian film team.
  • The role as actor Wayne Maunder was the last work by Luke Perry, who died of a stroke before the film was released.
  • With Rumer Willis and Maya Hawke, the cast includes two children of actors with whom Tarantino has worked in the past. Bruce Willis and Uma Thurman star in Pulp Fiction , among others .
